Elite Veteran Posts: 644 Location: Falcon, CO | Hi All, What is the diameter of the ring gear for 1956? O'Reilly Auto and Rockauto claim that the Fury came with a 303 had a 8 3/4" ring gear. I need to replace the pinion seal, and both say that National 7216 is the correct seal. I still have to pull the yoke and the old seal, it'll be a couple days before I get to it. Any info will help, Thanks, Tony

O'Reilly Auto and Rockauto claim that the Fury came with a 303 had a 8 3/4" ring gear. I need to replace the pinion seal, and both say that National 7216 is the correct seal. And then again O'Reilly and Rockauto could full of Sh1t? Pretty sure those older (to 1957) diffs were 8 1/4" at least for everything smaller than an Imperial, e.g. Dodges and Plymouths. And then there was this: ybshore - 2018-09-06 4:22 AM Older (pre '57) 8-3/4 diffs will not fit into the true 8-3/4 ('57 and later) axle housing. The axle housing has a different bolt pattern for the carrier, the axles have different splines, and the axle bearings are all different. I've been looking for the pinion seal for my '56 Imperial and can't find a source. It's 2 5/8 ID x 3 1/2 OD. Can anyone send me to a lead? TY. I think the rear diff seal that you are looking for for your 56 Plymouth (yes, I know it's a Fury - but it's not an Imperial) is a 3.11 inch diameter 663 602 (as shown below) Like this one: https://www.ebay.com/p/Rear-Axle-Pinion-Seal-1937-1957-Dodge-Plymout... Or this modern one from SKF, i.e. 18880: https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/skf,18880,differential+pinion+seal... https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1837032&jsn=3 Edited by 56D500boy 2019-06-18 1:46 AM

The issue of diff size is moot. You don't have an 8 3/4". I have a NAPA/SKF 18880 in my hand. The spec are as in the link, i.e. Width (in) 0.5 Shaft (in) 1.875 Bore (in) 3.105 Outer Diameter (in) 3.11 Should be the modern (no felt) equivalent of the OE 663 602.

Elite Veteran Posts: 644 Location: Falcon, CO | I believed you, the closest NAPA didn't have it, but I picked it up at the NAPA warehouse in Colorado Springs this afternoon. I'll be working on my friend's Fury Thursday. Thanks again guys,

Elite Veteran Posts: 644 Location: Falcon, CO | I just compared the measurements for National 7216 and SKF 18880, the measurements are identical except that the 7216 still uses leather instead of rubber.

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10193 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Tony - 2019-06-20 4:48 PM Installed the new SKF seal this afternoon. Looks good. Any chance that you counted the splines on the pinion shaft/pinion flange? I am getting mine changed on Tuesday (I'm also going to a 58 style pinion flange and a 7260 type U-joint at the same time). Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10193 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Tony - 2019-06-20 4:48 PM Installed the new SKF seal this afternoon. I had an 18880 installed in my 56 Dodge rear diff on Tuesday and I think that it is leaking. I am sure that the shop will say that because I provided the new pinion flange (yoke) *AND* the SKF seal, it's their fault. How did you remove the pinion flange nut? I thought that I couldn't do it with the car on the garage floor (even jacked up with jack stands). Now I will probably have to redo the seal. :(
