Hello,
My new Imperial was delivered today but unfortunately is missing the keys (among other things). Does anyone here know the best way to break in? I cant see any locks electronic or otherwise through the windows. The vent windows and trunk are open so I may be able to provide power to a window switch if the motors still work. I'm a bit worried about doing that when I can't put out a fire if one starts though. Any help or insight would be appreciated

Ben.

Welcome to the board.

I would recommend enlisting the services of a locksmith; even if you could break in you'll need the locksmith to make keys anyway.

If you can open the vent window, stick your hand in and open the inside door handle.

Push the inside handle to the rear, this'll unlock the door

Alright, good news and bad news. I managed to get the rear drivers side door to open by pushing the handle with a piece of wood through the vent window. While looking through the car my sister noticed a piece of paper sticking out of the seat and both keys were taped to it so That hurdle solved itself. The bad news is I still can't get any of the others to budge and the one I got open now won't latch. I gave everything a healthy dose of PB Blaster so we'll see if anything loosens up. If I have to tear into the doors I'll probably have to cut the door cards since they are closed with the doors. Does anyone have some good pictures with them removed so I can cut a little as possible? Also assuming I get things working how do you lock and unlock the front doors? I see no switches for it.

To lock you push the inside handle to front and to unlock you push to rear. On rear doors (if you have a 4 doors) ther's a small button that you can turn to lock or unlock

I do have rear doors and the rear drivers side came open. All the rest seem to be stuck as no matter how I move the door handle it won't budge. I'm hoping a few more doses of penetrating oil will do the trick. I assume the mechanisms are frozen up from spending 40 years in a field.

If you haven't already, you should register your Imperial on this site:

It's likely the release mechanism inside the door shell. So pulling on either the interior door release, or exterior door release won't budge ? If that's the case, then you will have to remove as much of the interior door panel as possible without damaging it. The panel, if it's like other 57-9s, is held to the shell by clips that can be pried out with a door panel clip removal tool.

Probably the best idea is to bend the door panel enough to stick a 5/16 socket with extension into the shell and remove the outside door handle. Two nuts to remove. Then you have access to the interior of the door shell. Be patient. Don't damage the interior door panel. It's made of unobtanium.

Can you post a photo of the front interior door panel ? That may help me figure this one out.

Ron

If you can roll the windows down (or someone can help you by being inside the car) pull on the interior and exterior door handles at the same time...has always worked for me, getting 99% of the 57-59 cars I have to allow the door latch to open.

The latches on the 57-59's had pot metal used inside, and the rollers wear, puting the latched out of adjustment...there are other threads on the FL site that have dealt with this topic.

That's how we got the first one (via a piece of wood through the vent window). Unfortunately the rest seem rather stuck. I've been oiling it daily and hoping to try again next time I have a helper.

Don't know what you are oiling. But the goal here is to release the star wheel so that it turns freely. The mechanism to do this is a lever on the door latch mechanism. That lever is pulled either by the interior or exterior door handle. The linkage inside the door shell that connects to that mechanism is frozen. So just spraying blindly hoping that you hit the right spot is going to result in oil-soaked panels and no positive results. You may want to look at this setup in the parts book in order to gain a better understanding.

Where can I find the parts book? I was hoping to see what I'm trying to spray to make it a bit less blind. I'm not to worried about soaking the door cards as they will need to be fully replaced anyway due to the 40 year stint this car sat in a field.

Go here (below) and download and save the 1955-58 and 1959 Parts Manuals. Open them as pdfs. You can used Ctrl F to search.

http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=107

When you get some experience with it, you can find the images and PNs that you need, like this one:

Can you get the windows down? If so you will have better access to the parts that should be getting oiled. The control arms that goes across the interior of the door from the handle to the rear side of each door should move freely. The other part is the star shaped gear that is attached to this going to the outside of the door but inside the door frame so you cant see it when the door is shut.

Dont mess with the exterior door handles too much they break easy. The interior ones also break but you can remove them and put a rod or something in there place so you dont break anything. Wiggle the interior handle back and forth to break things loose once the parts are soaked. The interior handles are held in via set screws that probably need some oil love.
