Location: Lower Mainland BC | Up until yesterday, I thought that I understood the painting order of my 3 tone 56 Dodge (261 Paint code = Sapphire white roof, Royal blue poly upper (saddle) and Wedgewood blue lower). Based on the Royal Blue poly on the firewall and inside the car (e.g. B-pillar), I had assumed that the body was first painted in Royal Blue poly and then the other colours were added on top of that. As of yesterday (see below), when I was doing some work on the roof by the rain gutter (some minor rust blistering), I am confused.
Here is what the car looked like in 1990 or so:
Here is what I found yesterday, showing the dark blue *OVER* the light blue. That makes no sense (to me). What am I missing?

Location: So. Cal | On the '57-'58 cars, the roof color (and side sweep color) is always done first. They often sprayed it all over the back end of the car too. Then the main body color goes on. Yours seems backwards of that, so they likely changed their procedure in '57. |

Location: Hay Lakes, Alberta, Canada | My '57 Chrysler was done that way too...the metal under the package shelf was the light green, and also under the dark green paint, where it has worn through. I imagine it was done that way, because it was easier to mask off the roof and sweep, rather than mask off the whole body, to spray the roof and sweep after... |

Location: CA | It seems exactly as whats been said already although I would add that in my experience I've noticed that the body/doors/hood/trunk of the car seem to be totally painted with the trim/roof color first and then the main color applied afterward due to wear patterns of cars I've had. The front fenders seem to be the exception due to the addition of the painted steel strip with the trim filler color applied. |
