Expert 5K+ Posts: 9904 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Last week I had an SKF 18880 pinion seal installed because that is what SKF said crossed from a 663 602. It was installed on a NOS 58 Dodge pinion flange, i.e. no wear grooves. Despite the new seal and the new flange, I have dripping from the front of the rear diff. The shop that did the work is blaming my parts (I supplied the seal and the NOS flange). I could potentially try another pinion seal, e.g. a leather National 7216, as long as I soak the leather in oil for a day or so first. I talked to my NOS parts guy this afternoon and he wondered aloud whether the leak was not at the new seal but past the splines, i.e. the old pinion flange and pinion gear splines might have worn each other and now there is still a gap between the splines of the NOS flange and the OE pinion gear splines. I had never heard/thought of that. *IF* that is the issue, is there a cure? Sealant on the splines? Here are he specs on the SKF 18880 and the National 7216: (Mopar663602_SKF18880_PinionSealDetails.jpg) (Nation7216PinionSealDetails.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Mopar663602_SKF18880_PinionSealDetails.jpg (75KB - 221 downloads) Nation7216PinionSealDetails.jpg (91KB - 221 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9667 Location: So. Cal | I don't recommend using that leather seal. They are easy to damage during the install, and potentially won't last as long. You can get a direct replacement that is made using rubber from Motive Gear, and sold through Summitracing. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mgr-7216 Also, if your splines were leaking, they would leak further up near your u-joint, not at the seal area, so that is an easy thing to determine. But those things go on so tight, I really doubt that would be happening. Edited by Powerflite 2019-07-03 7:53 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9904 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Thanks for the Motive Gear lead Nathan. I can't see any sizing info but this is what Motive Gear says: "7216 Application Notes For Chrysler 8.75" (742) Housing Vehicle Applications 1957 – 1968 Chrysler 300 1957 – 1968 Chrysler Imperial 1957 – 1968 Chrysler Town & Country 1966 – 1968 Dodge Charger 1968 Dodge Coronet 1966 – 1968 Dodge Dart 1965 – 1968 Dodge Monaco 1963 – 1968 Dodge Polara 1968 Dodge W100 Pickup 1965 – 1967 Dodge W100 Series 1967 Dodge W300 Series 1970 Ford Royal 1964 – 1968 Plymouth Barracuda 1957 – 1968 Plymouth Belvedere 1965 – 1967 Plymouth Belvedere II 1957 – 1968 Plymouth Fury 1968 Plymouth Fury I 1965 – 1968 Plymouth Fury II 1965 – 1968 Plymouth Fury III 1968 Plymouth Road Runner 1965 Plymouth Satellite 1967 – 1968 Plymouth Satellite 1970 Plymouth Satellite 1960 – 1968 Plymouth Valiant" I don't want to go leather either. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9667 Location: So. Cal | That application list is bogus. No 742 housing was ever installed into any A-body application. Also, '60-'63 Abody cars didn't even have an 8 3/4 as an option, so how could they have used this? I think that the A-body 8 3/4 started in 1966, but I'm not certain. They include the '66-'68 Dart that wouldn't have used it, but fail to include the '60-'62 Dart that could have! And...., I am uncertain which cars from '57-'61 would have used the large 985 case. I have only seen them installed in the Chrysler's and DeSotos. I'm not sure if they were used in the Plymouths & Dodges or not. Even my large '57 Windsors received the smaller 657 case. That lone '70 Ford Royale is an interesting addition. Did it really use a Mopar 8 3/4 rear in it or...?? That would be an odd choice for it as they had to have had IRS in them. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9904 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Previously, I crossed a Mopar 663 602 (the OE seal in 1956) to a SKF 18880 then to the Timken/National 7216 Today, in searching for alternatives, I tracked the rear diff seal PN for a 1958 Dodge (where the NOS pinion flange I had installed would have lived) from a Mopar 1828 719 to an SKF 18912. Interestingly, the nominal dimensions of the 18912 are the same as the 18880 that you installed for me, i.e. 3.105" outer, 1.875" inner and 0.5" thick. Maybe the materials are different (??) Pricing is more than double the 18880. https://www.vsm.skf.com/ca/en/products/18912 My local Lordco says there is one 18912 in Vancouver. Napa Burnaby says their system has one in the Langley warehouse (for more money than Lordco). Dave F.
