Extreme Veteran Posts: 384 Location: Hershey PA | We know that Chrysler used a new VIN system in 1960. Make-Series Year-Plant 1xxxxx with each item identified by a number eg Desoto was noted as 7, Adventurer as 2, 1960 as 0 What was the code and name of each plant? What cars were made at the respective plants?

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | frwl - 2019-07-23 7:29 AM 1960 : 1 = Mound Road, Detroit, Michigan (Plymouth) 2 = Hamtramck, Detroit, Michigan (Dodge) 3 = Jefferson, Detroit, Michigan (Dodge Full Size, DeSoto and Chrysler) 4 = Warren Avenue, Detroit, Michigan (Imperial) 5 = Los Angeles, California (Plymouth, Dodge and Chrysler) 6 = Newark, Delaware (Plymouth) 7 = Valley Park, St.Louis, Missouri (Plymouth and Dodge) 9 = Windsor, Ontario, Canada (Chrysler) To clear up some confusion and add some background to the plants. The Mound Road plant was the Plymouth engine plant, building polyhead V8 engines and was located north of Detroit. Plant #1 was Lynch Road, (Plymouth Plant) opened in 1929 for production of Plymouth cars. By the lid-1930's Lynch Road plant was the world's largest with three assembly lines under one roof. The plant underwent major renovations for the 1960 model year to handle building unibody cars. Prior to 1960 Plymouth bodies were trucked over from the Briggs Body plant. Chrysler purchased Briggs Body in Dec., 1953. Plant #2 was also known as Dodge Main, began producing cars in late 1914, and was the 1960 home to Valiant (line 1) and Dodge Dart and Matador / Polara (line 2) Plant #3, East Jefferson, also built Dodge Matador / Polara models later in the model year as well as DeSoto and Chrysler models. Production of DeSoto would end in November, 1960. Plant #4 was the Los Angeles Plant, began Plymouth car and Dodge Truck production in 1932. 1960 production included Plymouth, Dodge Dart, Dodge Matador/Polara and Chrysler. No DeSotos at LA after 1959 and 1960 was the last year for Chrysler production at LA. Plant #5 was the West Warren, or Imperial plant, at 8505 West Warren Avenue in Dearborn, MI. It would be closed in May, 1961 and production moved to East Jefferson. Plant was built in 1924 by Paige Motor Co (later Graham-Paige Motors Corp) and became part G-P's assets used by Kaiser-Frazer Corp. GP sold the plant to Chrysler in 1948 and DeSoto used it 1950 to 1958. Production at plant #6, Newark, included Valiant, Plymouth, Dodge Dart and Dodge Matador/Polara. Plant was built in 1951 as a tank plant and then renovated for Plymouth and Dodge passenger car assembly late in 1957. Plant #7, Chrysler's newest assembly plant at St. Louis, Missouri, built 1960 Valiant, Plymouth, Dodge Dart and Dodge Matador/Polara. It replaced the Plymouth assembly plant in Evansville, Indiana. Plant #9, Windsor plant at Windsor, Ontario, Canada, for 1960 built Valiant, Plymouth, Dodge Dart, Dodge Polara, DeSoto Adventurer, Chrysler Windsor and Saratoga models. All models not built in Canada were imported from Detroit. Plant was built in 1929, about the same time as the Lynch Road plant. 1960 was the last year for Dodge Polara and DeSoto production in Canada. Plant #8, Wyoming Avenue, is not always mentioned as it was the export preparation plant. All CKD models for export were boxed up for shipment here. The plant was built in 1917 by the Saxon Motor Company and then sold to General Motors when Saxon got unto financial problems. Buick apparently used the plant during the 1920's and Chrysler Corp. purchased the plant in 1934. DeSoto assembly began with the 1937 models and ended with the 1958 models. 1961 was a bit of a mix up with DeSoto coming to end part way through the 1961 model year, big Dodge Polara production ending with the 1961 models, Plymouth and Dodge Dart production taking a nose dive, and Imperial moving back to East Jefferson in May, 1961. And Dodge added the Lancer for 1961, built at the same plants as Valiant. 1961 : 1 = Lynch Road, Detroit, Michigan (Plymouth) 2 = Hamtramck, Detroit, Michigan - Line 1 (Dodge Dart) & Line 2 (Valiant and Lancer) 3 = East Jefferson, Detroit, Michigan (Dodge Polara, DeSoto and Chrysler) 4 = West Warren Avenue, Detroit, Michigan (Imperial) Moves to East Jefferson, May, 1961 5 = Los Angeles, California (Valiant, Plymouth, Lancer, Dodge Dart) 6 = Newark, Delaware (Valianr, Plymouth, Lancer. Dodge Dart) 7 = St.Louis, Missouri (Valiant, Plymouth, Lancer, Dodge Dart) 9 = Windsor, Ontario, Canada (Valiant, Plymouth, Dodge Dart, Chrysler Windsor and Saratoga models) Convertibles, and Chrysler New Yorker and Imperial models could be imported from the U.S.
