Expert Posts: 2002 Location: Branson, MO | Hey guys, I find all kinds of shoes on the internet but none specify the size. I want to replace my originals with what will work the best. I have not disassembled mine yet but I'm thinking they would be 11" by 2 1/2". Am I right? My guess is that the Dodge models comparable to the Firesweep are the same. And my car is just a standard Firesweep with factory power brakes and not Adventurer powered or any heavy duty suspension that I see. I'm only interested in replacing the shoes and not interested in converting to disc brakes - just to keep it factory original. Thanks, Fred

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9899 Location: Lower Mainland BC | You are going to have to at least pull the drum to figure out for sure if they are 11 x 2 or 11 x 2.5. Probably but not necessarily the 11 x 2.5, based on the list below. I don't have 59 info but in the 57-58 period, the Dodges and the Desoto Firesweeps shared a lot of parts (because the Firesweep was built on the smaller Dodge chassis). For 57, the Firesweep was an S27; for 58, the Firesweep was the LS1. As you will see below, at least in the 57-58 period, the S27 and LS1 designations for the brake shoe PNs are mixed in with the various D66, LD3, etc designations. Looks mostly like 11 x 2.5". PN 1818 506 in 1957 and 1879 401 in 1958. Some 11 x 2.5s on eBay (?): https://www.ebay.ca/itm/1957-1958-Dodge-Brake-Shoes-FRESH-STOCK-for-... Hope this helps a bit. Expert Posts: 2002 Location: Branson, MO | Yeah, that's kinda what I figured. The best way is to pull the drum and check to be exact. Once that's done, I should be able to get the correct replacements. Thank you 56D500boy, you always have a wealth of usable information - sincerely appreciated. Fred

You're welcome. I do try to help. But truth to be known, I do NOT KNOW ANYTHING. However, I do know how to find things and present the results. Case in point, I was limiting myself to the 55-58 Mopar Parts manual pdf that I use ALL THE TIME for my 56 Dodge when looking for an answer to your question. Having posted what I found based on 57-58 Dodge/Firesweep connections, I gave my forehead a slap after I realized that I could probably find a 59 Mopar parts catalogue. Which I just did by going to Mymopar.com: http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=107 I downloaded, saved and opened the "1959 Mopar Parts Book" pdf. I first checked the 59 model designations, e.g. Dodge Custom Royal = MD3 and Desoto Firesweep = MS1. Knowing that, I went to Section 5-03-1 (same as in the 55-58 Parts book) and found what was needed: The big Dodges and the Firesweeps shared the 11 x 2.5 brake systems and the PN for your shoes would be 1879 401. This is the same as the 1958 part number. See below. Now I know I helped and I now have a new resource to check, the 59 Parts book. EDIT: I just realized (another forehead slap) that the PNs that I was quoting were for the linings, not the shoes AND linings. In this case the PN is 1850965 1959 Dodge/Firesweep/Windsor 11 x 2.5" Front and Rear Brake shoes. Expert Posts: 2002 Location: Branson, MO | Thanks again 56D500boy. Question: I see where there is a different P/N (1943804) for 11" x 2 1/2" front shoes and linings indicating 3 platform guides including 1959 MS1 DeSotos. What difference does this make? Edited by Viper Guy 2019-07-27 2:47 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9899 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Center plane vs Three Platform. Pull a drum and check the shoe retaining system. Different. http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/Lit/Master/138/page01.htm Edited by 56D500boy 2019-07-27 3:21 PM (59DodgeCenterPlaneVS3Platform_Front.jpg) (59DodgeCenterPlaneVS3Platform_Rear.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 59DodgeCenterPlaneVS3Platform_Front.jpg (150KB - 75 downloads) 59DodgeCenterPlaneVS3Platform_Rear.jpg (151KB - 65 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9650 Location: So. Cal | Once you figure out how to work with the old style spring, there isn't a lot of difference between them. If you would like to improve your braking, purchase some 12" drum setups from BigM. He sells a lot of them.

Call me -- Craig, Mobile Parts -- 516 - 485 - 1935..... Yes you did for a '60 Dodge Polara - everything was great and I put in a plug for you at the time. Just underwent surgery so my brake repair on the DeSoto will have to wait a few weeks. But I'm pretty sure they are 11 x 2.5. Not sure about early or late design. Are the shoes the same regardless?

Veteran Posts: 253 | No -- but -- YES..... The later design will work on the early, the early will only work on the early. You need the later design -- and that IS what I have -- so you are good to go. Call me, when you're up and about.... And you already know I have the great stuff -- N.O.S. ++ Asbestos ++ Feel better, yours, Craig....
