That's really a very rare and complete unit from the first year of the AutoPilot.

For those of you that didn't know; The inventor Ralph Teetor was actually blind.

Why did they use 2 brake safety switches, one hydraulic and one electrical?

Redundancy because the only way to turn it off on the first generation auto pilot was to step on the brake to cut the power to the engage circuit. If one switch failed or was out of adjustment the other would still cut power to the engage circuit. Later units would have you pull the knob out to engage and push the knob in to disengage. On the first generation you push the knob in to engage but you can not pull it back out to turn it off so brake pedal or ignition switch are the only shut offs for the system.

Even though the later type had a pull out/push in engage button, the double switch circuit was used up to 1960 (not sure if later as well).

For the first generation, I strongly recommend to use the double switch circuit (somewhat overkill on the later AutoPilots).

Mind that the hydraulic switch must be of a "Normal Open" type (rare) that cuts the circuit when the hydraulic pressure rises in the brake lines.
