Since I got my 56 Custom Royal D500 almost three years ago now (Sept. 16, 2016), I have been collecting info about D500's, including engine numbers. They started building the D500 engines in Nov/Dec 1955 and the first ones went into cars build in late Dec. 1955. (They started at D500-1001 and someone here as -1003). I have heard unsubstantiated rumours of engine numbers as high as D500-12nnn but the highest one that has been more or less substantiated is 8120 which was cast in June 1956. Since it was supposedly a month between block casting and completed installation, I am having trouble believing that there were 4000 more engines made between June and the end of the 56 Dodge model run in Sept/Oct.

Any additional information will be appreciated, especially with some kind of documentation, e.g. IBM card with D500 engine number and vehicle build date.

This is what I have gathered so far:

Well you do have at least 5 data points to start with - which is a better start than I had.

Got one new data point from Phil W. (Thanks Phil !!). Engine number with casting date (hidden under the intake manifold/valley tray).

D500-1862 Cast on January 26, 1956. Likely installed in a 56 Custom Royal D500 Lancer 2dr hardtop (Phil has bits of that car including the engine but not the cowl body plate).

I got some more 56 Dodge D500 numbers with dates from Bruce F. today. None of them was higher that the D500-8120 that Dave H. has that was cast in early June 1956. The latest 56 Dodge that Bruce F. had in his registry that included Coronets, Royals and Custom Royals, with both poly and hemi engines, was D500-7976 that was in a wagon that was built in Detroit on July 20, 1956.

I also found something today regarding the change over between 56 and 57. There is a story at Allpar about the release of the 57 models in late October 1956. This implies to me that the change over occurred in August or early Sept 1956, i.e. even less time to build enough engines to get to the rumoured D500-12nnn.

Someone pointed me to an old D500 thread from 2010 today and in that thread there was more info about the Golden Lancer with D500-7518:

dougruffner - 2010-10-26 6:21 PM

A picture of my data plate is attached, the date is 0723. I think that the build date is probably July 23, 1956, because the Golden Lancer color scheme was a spring option (supposedly). Also, I have the Dodge Owner Service Certificate for this car. The info is:

42618XXX - Vehicle Number

D500-7518 - Engine Number

Custom Royal - Model Code

Lancer - Body Type

December 29, 1956 - Delivery Date

Issued by Weatherly Motor Company Ventura, California

From the engine number, the colors, and the delivery date, this was probably one of the last D500's built. It also appears to have sat on the dealer's lot for a long time, unless the certificate was for a used vehicle.

With this body data plate photo:

That 7518 was late in the game but there were more. For example there were at least three later Detroit built D500s:

Coronet Convertible 351 52470 D500-7803 07 19 10 300
HURST/LOOKED AT 350 68162 D500-7961 01 14 11 008
4DR WAGON D500 351 53652 D500-7976 07 20 10 024

(these last three are from Bruce Faulkner's data base)

Clearing up some stuff on my desk credenza and I refound my "Standard Catalog of 1950s Chrysler" book by Jon Robinson that bought last December. On page 139 of the book, talking about the 1957 Dodges, Jon Robinson stated "The 1957 Dodge lineup was introduced on October 30, 1958(sic) (he meant 1956), the same day that all other Chrysler products debuted that season". (He needed a better typo checker)

So now I know the start of the 1957 run. In regards to the 1956 Dodges, he does say, on page 132, that they were introduced on Oct. 7, 1955. What he doesn't say was the last date that the 1956 models were built. Given the factories typically need a month for the change-overs. The last 56 Dodges might have been built in Sept. 1956, which would further imply that the last D500 engines were cast in August, 1956.

Would be nice to confirm these speculations and/or find more evidence of engine numbers past D500-8120.

Hello Dave! I just stumbled upon your thread. I have the intake and valley pan cover off of my D500.
Here are pictures of the numbers for you.

Engine serial # D500-1003 Stamped in the block to the left
Engine casting # is 1630029-7 and cast on 11-22

Intake casting # is 1634262 and cast on 11-29-55

I may be confused. Are these cast numbers, or part numbers?

Thanks Hunter I do have your D500-1003 engine in the data base already and figured it was an early (one of the very earliest for sure). If I remember correctly your build date for the car is in mid-December so the 11-22 casting for the engine block makes some sense.

Casting numbers are rarely the Part Number for these cars. I did just check the block and intake manifold casting numbers against the 55-58 Parts manual. No joy. The actual 56 D500 intake manifold PN is 1731 515, so go figure.

I recently purchased a bore "endo" scope so now I can find out my D500-4306's casting date (because I know where to look now). I will report back tomorrow (if I remember)

Well it wasn't "tomorrow" but it was (finally a break in the rain) today.

Inspired by Hunter's photo of his 315 D500-1003's casting number and date, I tried to suss out the ones on my D500-4603. Used the "endo" scope but it wasn't as easy as I thought that it would be. I poked it between and under the intake runners on the driver's side, I was able to see that the casting date was 4 - 9 - 56. However, I could only see those numbers one at a time, and getting a reading on the casting number was difficult. So I got out my older (and now thoroughly abused Sony mini-digital camera and stuck it down into and beneath the intake manifold (through spaces between the intake runner's etc). Confirmed the 4-9-56 casting date (in two photos) and the casting number - much the same as Hunter's except the last hyphenated number. I can't tell if mine is 6 or 8. (??).

The April 9, 1956 casting date fits with the theory that the castings were made about a month (or so) before the car is built (at the LA plant), giving some time for the casting to "cure", get machined and the engine assembled before it was lowered into the engine bay on the build date (May 15, 1956 in my car's case). I assume that the D500's were all built in Detroit so the 5 or 6 weeks between casting and the engine installation would (should?) also give some time for rail/truck transport from Detroit to LA.

(BTW - I had no idea that my engine was so wet with oil (or Power Steering fluid (ATF in my case)) down in there. Another project for another day.

Nathan: Thanks. Yes I did see that one (and saved the photos). I haven't added the info to the data base yet. (Must do that tomorrow).

What I didn't notice until just now is the heads are interchangeable, left to right, because there are cooling manifold ports on both ends of the heads. At the rear, there are blanking plates. Are the other 331, 341, 354, 392, etc. hemi heads like that too?

Heads are interchangeable from side-to-side, true. This goes for every early Hemi. As you see, the water ports at the end of each head in "dry intake" Hemi engines are either connected to the crossover manifold, or blocked off by the plates.

There is one instance where the heads are not directly interchangeable, and that is when the car has factory air conditioning. The factory drilled and tapped the heads for a/c mounting brackets on only one end, so you can't swap the heads side-to-side if you plan to use the brackets.

Interesting pics of the engine numbers! I noticed the '56' cast after the day and month on them. My engine doesn't have a year cast on it. Only '11-22' is cast. I went out and took another pic of it. Please excuse the gasket dust as I am still cleaning it up.

Well it was raining today but I got lost tracking down Doug Ruffner (RIP in 2016). On the way, I found this sniff of data from 2012 (I wonder whether Charlie kept notes about the donor cars):

Dave, here is some info to add to your base.
Again, courtesy of Karl Pippard. Here is the Kiekaefer VIN list of 56 Dodge D500 Coronet race cars. They were all Sapphire White 2 Dr sedans or convertibles.

Sedan, 35025633, D633-37459. Car # 500, Sold to Peter Van Oundenhoven without an engine. Surviving race engine #106 was in car #500 during the 1956 GN season.

Sedan, 35056663, D500-1114, Car# 500-B, sold to Wm. Ross & Don MacDonald

Sedan, 35089663, D500-2164, Car # 501, sold to as above.

Sedan, 35090005, D500-2129. Car # 502, sold to as above.

Convert, 35122423, D500-4955, Car # 503 or 504. Sold to Madison Motors

Note:
Both William Ross & Don MacDonald were from Neenah,WI. They purchased a total of 4 ex-race cars (one was a 300B) along with extra sets or racing wheels and tires. It is unknown what became of Ross and MacDonald or their ex-race cars.
The dealer code for the 56 Dodge race cars was 59999. All were "customer drive away" and billed to K Corp'n.

Thanks, Karl.

I recently obtained a copy of the May 1996 issue of WPC News (thanks Ian) that contained the article about the 56 D500s written by Dennis and Karen Kennedy. There is a lot of information in that article. One thing that I wanted to share is the estimated number of D500 cars (and engines?) that were made. As shown below, the estimate is about 4% of total 56 Dodge production or about 8255 D500 cars (and wagons). This kind of fits with the highest engine number that has been found so far: 8120 (Dave H's spare D500 engine).

But still, the search continues if only to confirm the upper limit of 56 D500 production and to create a graph of engine number versus production date.

From Pg. 16 of the May 1996 WPC News:

Not a rainy day but a very low key day (Dec. 25/Christmas) so I go into it and added all of Bruce Faulkner's D500 engine number info as well as the info provided by Greg Leggett. (Thanks guys).

There is a bit of strangeness in a couple of cases but I doubt that it could be sorted without the help of someone at FCA Historical (and that isn't very likely to happen).

This implies to me that the change over occurred in August or early Sept 1956, i.e. even less time to build enough engines to get to the rumoured D500-12nnn.

Based on info in the 1957, 58 and 59 Branham Automobile Reference Books, the 1957 Dodges were released on October 30, 1956. Assuming that they needed a month (or more) to change over from the old 1956 production lines to the new 1957 production lines, that would mean that the probable end of production for the 1956 Dodges was sometime in September, 1956. Since it appears that the D500 engines were cast at least 2 weeks ahead of installation in the cars, that would mean that the end of 1956 D500 production (at least the casting part of the process) would have been in August, 1956. Again, with the known highest D500 engine number 8120 (i.e. the 7120th D500 engine) cast in early June, 1956, I seriously doubt that the (unsubstantiated) rumour of D500-12nnn was physically possible, i.e. more than half again the Dec 55 to June 56 D500 production would have been needed in two months to achieve a D500-12nnn. Doubt it.

However, I *AM* willing to change my mind based on more and better info.

Hello

My very first post on Forwardlook.

I have a 1956 CRL, D500, Factory air, FOUR DOOR HARDTOP, Engine number 5434. I personally have never seen or read about another D500 4dr HT with factory air. Can anyone comment? BTW I have a KD500 powered track roadster equipped with Hilborns and "hidden" EFI. https://tomstrongman.com/the-maserodi-8cvtr/

Thanks for all the hard work 56D500boy

Dave

Thanks for the kind words, the TR project only took 20 years to complete.

I have an old photo of my 56 D500 showing the "AC scoop" on the rear fenders and the D500 flags, which are barely visible. I tried to copy and paste the jpeg file in this Reply but no go...how do you attach and image file?

BTW the wheels and the drum brakes of the TR are Dodge 1936/1955; it has 4 corner torsion bar suspension.

20 years = Wow. Great job. Lots of subtle details that need second (third/fourth) looks for the first time viewer to figure out, I am sure.

Nice D500. I see the air con scoop and the D500 flags.

I thought those wheels looked old, as in "artillery". See below (36 Dodge brochure page below)

The first issue with posting photos is jpegs from iPhones do NOT work here (I don't know why). They have to be .jpg.

Second issue is they have to be < 250 kB. I have found that resizing to 1024 x 768 yields about 190 kB so that works.

More details on how to post photos are in this thread that I started:

The other day DepsilonD (Dave N.) contacted me with photos of his D500 engine core. One photo shows the engine number (D500-8256), the casting number 1730 429-4 and the casting date (6 11 = June 11th, 1956). This is the highest number verified D500 engine number that I have found. I will have to update the table. Done (see below photo)

Thanks Dave N.

You are welcome for the Kiekhaefer VINs and engine numbers--relayed via Greg L. All original engines were pulled and hand-built motors were installed in the race cars after extensive dyno-tuning.

Kiekhaefer Dodge V8 #106 is a good example of what I mentioned above because it still exists:

Work commenced on March 15th, 1956, when #106 was aero-honed and equipped with race heads and chamfered push rod ends. Dyno pulls were rerun on March 16th, with a high of 299 horsepower, then a new intake was installed and the ports matched. Pulls were rerun on March 17th and then the distributor changed out. The engine was removed from the dyno on March 17th. A build up record was filled out on May 18th. Pulls were conducted on May 18th with a Chevy cam installed. The high hp achieved was 315. The next entry was on May 22nd. The fuel pump was changed out and then 325 hp @5205 rpm was achieved with new carbs. On July 23rd, the engine was rerun on the dyno after it was removed from race car #500 and flown back to Wisconsin (note--In 1956, all engines were pulled after every race, flown back to Oshkosh, torn down, rebuilt, dyno-tuned and then flown back to the race team headquarters in Charlotte for reinstallation in the race cars). On July 24th, pulls were conducted with Holley carbs. On July 25th, a baffled intake manifold was replaced with a stock manifold. On July 26th, pulls were conducted with a reworked manifold and then the tappets were reset, new heads and calibrated distributor installed. Later on the 26th, a reworked manifold (with 3/8ths of an inch high partitions from the floor) was installed and the fuel pump was changed out. On August 21st, pulls were conducted with new heads, plugs and with Holley carbs. A high of 330 hp @5550 rpm was achieved. Pulls on August 22nd achieved 332 hp @5550 rpm, not once, but twice; however, it was necessary to remove a crack from the #4 main and to put straps on #s 4 and 2. The engine was briefly tested and then removed from the dyno on August 22nd. It was set aside without oil. It was never installed in a race car or run on the dyno, again.

Note: Car #500 was the first Dodge Coronet 2-door Club Sedan that ECK took delivery of in November 1955. It had an experimental D500 engine (1x4 barrel, 260 hp) installed by Dodge Division. ECK converted it to D500-1 specs (2x4 barrels, 276 hp) as soon as the parts were released. The body survived the 1956 NASCAR GN season and was sold off without an engine to Peter Van Oundenhoven.

Charlie Strang conducted/oversaw virtually all of the dynamometer testing during the 1956 racing season as Carl Kiekhaefer was out in the field with the race team. Also, Charlie Strang was responsible for the design of the D500-1 intake manifold, heavy-duty axle shafts and spindles for the race cars and R&D on camshafts, manifolds (intake and exhaust) and cylinder heads.

Thanks for that very interesting info Karl. I would be very interesting to know the engine number of that November 55 "experimental"
D500 engine. Hunter's D500-1003 was cast on Nov. 22, 1955. I understood that there was some time given for
"seasoning" the casting before it was machined and assembled. (??)

Do you want me to change the source of the Kiekhaefer engine numbers in my Excel spreadsheet from Greg L.
to you when I get home from SoCal? (I can't do it now on my wife's tablet )

35025633 was sold to Kiekhaefer Corp. as a driveaway on a consignment account (dealer #59998). The Dodge Division invoice was generated on 12/3/55. Code 812 "D500 EIGHT CLUB SEDAN" cost $1,500 ($1,354 + $146 D, E & H). Typed at the bottom of the invoice was "SPECIAL RACING CAR FOR MR. CARL KIEKHAEFER PER D. ENGLE'S LETTER TO R.V. DIEGEL 12-13-55 AND APPROVED BY W.C. NEWBERG."

Does a copy of that invoice exist on the internet anywhere that I could download it for the D500 "archives"? It sounds tasty.

Just a reminder that if you know of a D500 engine, I am always looking for D500 engine numbers and build dates (off the cowl data tag) AND/OR the
D500 engine number and the casting number and casting date (if the engine is not in its original car).

Engine number by the oil filler/breather tube and the casting number and casting date near the inner edge of the left head (under the intake manifold).

This means you, Phil W.

Like this from Dave N. (DepsilonD):

Today, while looking for a photo of a D500 solid lifter being removed from the lifter gallery, I bumped into photos of a D500 engine that I had found on eBay (and saved the photos) some time ago.

I didn't realize it then but looking at the photos today, I see that it has an even later D500 engine number than Dave N's D500-8256. This one is D500-8263:

The eBay engines clean lifter gallery (but no lifters):

Two updates:

1. 8263 was previously added to the table as 2263 but now that I check the photos again, I was wrong the first time, 2263 is wrong, 8263 is correct. I will correct the table.

2. The other day Igor (frwl) emailed me with a link to an old (2008) thread posted by "polaraguy4" (Jim Glasgow) with info about his 56 D500 and then later with an image (bad) of the car's IBM card.

It was a 56 Royal 2 dr hardtop with D500-3753, scheduled to be built in the LA plant around April 20, 1956. Seems that there might have been issues (??) because the shipping date was stamped May 21, 1956.

That said, it seems to slot into the listings in the table about right.

No photos of the car. Here is what polaraguy said about the cowl data tag:

polaraguy4 - 2011-12-23 2:33 PM

Here are the punch cards I just received from Chrysler Historical.

Here are the punch cards I just received from Chrysler Historical. Also, the data plate from the 57. 56 data plate is a little hard to read and I am having trouble removing it. I would post pictures but both are in various states of dis assembly. Both have manual steering manual brakes, the 56 has a respray but looks like original colors, green and white. The 56 has more miles but a very rust free body. Both have the original engines. I will be happy to confirm any data on the cars. Both are in need of total restoration. The 56 is a Royal Lancer with spinner hubcaps and cast headlight surrounds.

Data plate from the 56 says:

SCHED 0420
NO 5112
Model D632
BT 826
PT 076
TR 536

Always looking for new data if anybody ever finds any.

It's been awhile.

I did have some info about a 56 D500 that was supposed to have been built on June 22, 1956 ("06 22") with engine number D500-4505. I recently found more info
about that car.

It has a LA-plant VIN of 42617108, a 06 22 build date and an engine number of D500-4502.

So I updated the table with this new info (high lit in teal blue)

Found another one, courtesy of Hunter D. (who owns the 56 D500-1003 car). This one has D500-1164 and was probably built in the first week of January 1956. No details about original colour (Oriental Coral and Sapphire white?) or rear springs (6 leaves?) at this point in time.

The car:

Hate the Super Red Ram decal (personally, because I know that it is wrong wrong wrong)

Roger (moparranch) in Sweden PM'd me here to flag that the 56 Sierra D500 wagon (yellow and white) with engine D500-3509 that was on Hemmings (and maybe eBay) is now residing in Sweden.

Lucky owner. Very rare car.
