I've had this idea bouncing around for a few days now and thought I'd throw it up here for comments and further sugestions. Has anybody besides me ever considered doing an early 60s style mild custom with a 57-58 Plymouth? Unfortunatly I'm a little far along and comitted to what I'm doing with my 57 to make any major changes at this point but kind of thought I'd see what peoples reaction would be. YOu never know I may pick up another 57-8 just to try it.

The 60's mild customs generally consisted of milder touches than the full blown 50s customs had done to them so I'm thinking if a guy could find the right pats it would be almost bolt in. Her's what I've come up with so far:

Nose and deck it (basically remove the front hood/trunk emblem/letters and either remove the exterior trunk lock completly and go with a cable or electric inside release.

Removal of the rear fender modle name plates.

Tubular grill and the same treatment on a 58 lower valance.

Instead of shaving the exterior door handles use door handles from a 57-8 Dodge.

Dual rear antenas and dual mirrors.

Complete dash change to a 57-58 Dodge dash (it's a bolt in and I always loved the ribbon speedometer and flip around ash tray)

4 bucket seat interior (preferably swivel buckets) from an early 60's chrysler.

A bright candy apple paint job and chrome reverse wheels with baby moon caps.

Any other thoughts or comments? Good or bad idea? Other mods?

This is exactly the look I'm going for with my '60! Subtle, low, and clean. Those pictures are awesome, I wish more people would post pictures of their customs. I say DO IT !!!!

Yeah...I thought about doing that to my '57 at first, too...but I guess I'm more of one of those despised, traditional 'rat rodder' types...I was gonna slam mine...tinted glass... trim-rings with moons on stock steelies and wide whites...smoothed emblems, with only the "V" and a single spear...shaved handles...tubular grille...shot all over with black suede or satin JD Blitz Black....but, I've got a '62 F**d 2-door Falcon station wagon with a 302 already going in that direction, so I guess I'll keep my FL baby closer to stock...maybe "Christine" it instead...

By the way Mike, if you decide to put a '58 lower valence on your '57, think about me - I'm looking for all three front valence pieces for my '57! I can't find them anywhere, I've just about given up.

My Silver Special is mild custom. I built it ten years ago. I`ll get a pic of it today but for now check out my old 59 Dodge.

I like that plan. Trade in the baby moon caps for some Supremes or Radir Tri-ribs and I say go for it. Those pics really sell the idea, especially the cream '57 with the gold top.

Ah HA. So now I know who built the '59 Dodge Suburban. That one really tripped my trigger. Nice job there, Lou.

Should I assume this is also your Silver Special? And here's a few more pics of customs (the Fury and 2dr Dodge wagon aren't hardcore customs or anything, but one is lowered and the other has mags ) for anyone that's interested...

i LOVE the plodge! all it needs is a lowering job and skirts. the 56 plymouth is my kind of kustom (except the color) clean low with spinners, whitewalls and cruiser skirts. i love it. i like that beige 58 too except for the antennas and chromed radiator support that shines thru the grill. that looks ugly. should be flat black.

Here's a few more, not necessarily '57-58 Plymouths.

Just want to see if anyone else has any. I've got about 1500 FL images here on this computer...

Sheeeesh!!!! Excuse the dribble but those shots of customs are making me babble all over myself. My goodness, I feel emboldened to do something to my 57 Plymouth (I don't quite know what else to do but the wheels are turning).

Thanks for sharing those pics. Now, I know why I check this website while at work. My boss would love to know that my work day was not in vain!

Beautiful customs indeed!

Which brings me to another question, a Dutch 57 Imperial-owner is looking for examples of top-chopped 57-59 Imperials, does anybody have some pictures of those? Or know a website?

I'm really hoping someone knows something about this '58 Plymouth.

This photo was taken at Watson's in CA in the very late '50s. This was still a brand-new car. I haven't seen another '58 done quite like this, and just based on these miniscule pictures, I think it's one of the better looking custom '57-58s I've seen. Does anyone have any additional pictures of this machine?

BTW, based on the grille emblem, it looks like a six-cylinder!!

Wild kustoms!! Man, love those old Watson's pics. Hey Lou, you need to add a pic of your silver special to this post! I'll have to see if I can dig up a pic of the mild custom '60 Belvie I had.

Yep, last time I checked, I'm in Texas. That is Paso John's car, he emailed me a few shots of it. Here's the ones I had not yet posted. And I'm not sure what HCPU is.

Also, I believe this is Lou's Silver Special.

WOW!!! It`s nice to see both my cars in the same place. Like I did at Turkey Run. I seen the orange wagon Saturday afternoon. I parked next to it. What a picture....PRICELESS!!!! Too bad I didn`t have a camera with me. I`m going to be selling the "Green Machine" Silver Special soon. I`m gathering up money to buy the wagon back. I`m detailing the engine as we speak. It`s the same color as the wheels. I`ll get pictures over the weekend. If anybody is interested, motor, trans, rear has 18,000 miles on it. I posted it in the for sale section.

Anyways, I found a few more. Fellas, help me here - I need more in my collection!!

I won't stop posting them unless someone tells me to stop.

Thats right. I`m not getting the orange wagon back. He wants too much money for it. He`s a car dealer. I don`t know what I want. I like that wagon on the bay for $5500 but it`s been listed a few times so there must be a reason why it didn`t sell yet.

Good luck, Lou. And get something with FINS. Your buddy ratted you out - NO Buicks.

Here's a few more. I'm really starting to think you all hate this thread. Please contribute!

Here's a couple more.

Think the orange one doesn't belong? Look close, does that roofline look familiar?

My Silver Special is mild custom. I built it ten years ago. I`ll get a pic of it today but for now check out my old 59 Dodge.

I've seen that Dodge long-roof before - At Old Town in Orlando when I used to live down there.
It's very cool.
