| I would like to see if my car is numbers matching. Did they serial number big blocks in 1961? |

Location: Parts Unknown | That still isn't "numbers matching" in the sense that most people use the term.
The straight answer is the factory did not stamp the VIN number on the engine.
Best you can line up is a proper year code and displacement number. From there,
you could try and get a close casting date to what would have been normal for the
build date of the car, but that is about it.

Location: NorCal | B engines usually didn't get a dedicated serial number, if they did it would be stamped on the bottom of the pan rail near the starter. No way to tie that number to a particular car. |

If yours read R 36 and the build date (the other numbers on the machined pad under the distributor) is 3-6 weeks older than your cars build date, it is likely the original engine. |

| So the 61 engine has a casting number of 1852029 which the books says its a 62 BUT the date on the engine is early 61 and I believe its original, car was my aunts. I have a 60 413 out of the same model car and the casting number is 2120529 which the books say its a 413 from 59-64, so why a different 413 for one year in the same car. The thing that puzzles me is the 61 413 was on an engine stand, took it off to put the 60 413 on it and the lower bolts were off a tad. |

Have you edited the header? I thought this was about a 361, as Chucks answer and mine indicate. Forget the casting #s book. They list 383s as 361s. |

| That is a cool build sheet. I know the casting books are junk. I read on a max wedge site that my original 61 engine with that casting number is a truck engine used in 62 max wedge applications. The factory just threw in what they had laying around at the time I guess. |

| So i broke this thin piece off the bottom of the piston. Not sure whats its for. Can i still use the piston?

Location: Alaska | You should not reuse that piston as it will affect the engine balance and could also give you a ticking sound in the engine that can sound similar to a loose rod. |

| That thin piece that broke is the size of a fingernail. On a non performance old mans engine will it throw the balance off? |

1957-1958 were the last years the engine number was placed on the IBM card or broadcast sheet (depending upon plant and year). Would not be until mid-1968 that Chrysler built a "numbers matching" car when they began stamping VIN and engine numbers on the vehicle. From 1960 through 1968 Chrysler used the Shipping Order Number (SON) preceded by the assembly plant and model year codes stamped on the body for ID. But no engine numbers or VIN.
