can anyone decode this 59 dodge custom royal   Id plate  in the drivers door jam ?  M354

1959: Plymouth, DeSoto, Dodge, Chrysler, Imperial

For 1959 only in this series, “M” was the first digit for the model year, followed by the brand (1 = Plymouth Six, 2 = Plymouth V8, 3 = Dodge, 4 = DeSoto, 5 = Chrysler, 6 = Imperial, 7 = Dodge Canada). The third digit was the series (see below) and the fourth digit was the plant, using the codes shown in 1960-65; the rest were the sequence number. This setup might have been car-only.

0 = Coronet Six
1 = Coronet V8, Firesweep, Windsor, Imperial
3 = Savoy, Royal, Firedome, Saratoga, Crown, Regent (Canada)
5 = Belvedere, Custom Royal, Fireflite, New Yorker, LeBaron, Mayfair (Canada)
6 = Fury, Dodge/DeSoto 6 Taxi, Viscount (Canada)
7 = Suburban (Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto, and Chrysler wagon
8 = Plymouth Taxi, Dodge/DeSoto V8 taxi
9 = Sport Fury, D500, DeSoto Adventurer, Chrysler 300

For 1959, plant codes were somewhat different from 1960-65: 1 = Jefferson Ave, 2 = Dodge Main, 3 = Evansville, 4 = Los Angeles, 5 = Newark, 6 = Lynch Road, 7 = Imperial, 8 = St. Louis

Thanks  !

You know what would be helpful is a photo of the car, a photo of the VIN plate on the door jamb and a photo of the data plate under the hood on the cowl/firewall. Otherwise, it is difficult to help you.

There isn't much to learn from just the VIN.

according to the info from allpar and mymopar site , the info above says that a 1959 dodge d-500 door jam vin plate should be m39 4 .. the "9" signifies it's a d-500 model . and m354 is just  a standard custom royal model . does that sound correct? could you d-500 models owners please check to see what you vin plate in the door checks out to be? appreciate your help !

 SOOOOO..........back to the original question >>>>>>>>>   what model is vehicle from a id jam plate with numbers  M354 1OO252 ?

This broadcast sheet is  from oldwood crl  he sold , just an example  ............... but I've

 seen  the serial numbers don't match the body numbers.

So much misinformation here. First, only Calif-built cars have VIN on A-post. All others have VIN on data plate.

D500 is not coded into VIN. It is coded onto build sheet and dataplate. Position 36 on dataplate will have a 3 for single 4bbl and a 4 for dual quads. Can you take a nice clear photo of your dataplate and post it here ? M3541 is a Custom Royal built in Calif (designated by the 4. Although I don't have my shop manual in front of me. So someone needs to confirm).

Ron

good info Ron ! but what numbers/letters determine it's a 361 or 383 on cowl plate . because 59 came with 361 4bls too. I will post a pic of cowl id when I get it . Thanks Ron .

If there is a blank in position 36 (or something other than a 3 or 4), you have a 361.

Ron: As "requested":

Just to confirm that a VIN that starts with M354 is for a 1959 (M), Dodge (3), Custom Royal (5) built in the Los Angeles plant (4). The M352 that was posted earlier = 1959 (M), Dodge (3), Custom Royal (5) built in the Dodge Detroit Main plant (2)

yeah  .........I wish some of the  1959 d-500 owners would chime in and varify the number (9) in jam id plate. then we  would know for sure.

Ronbo says the (9) does not exist.  not too many real d-500 out there anyway.  just say n .

Here is the cowl tag on what is supposedly a real dual quad D500 and the VIN starts with M352 = 59 Dodge Custom Royal built at Dodge Main.

so.......... it appears  that this yellow tag is not a d-500 car . No number 3 or 4 under the 36 data bank. Still waiting to see  a cowl data  tag  showing a real d-500 car.

Well I was just going by this:

"Tom White has reportedly decoded the chassis number as a genuine Super D-500. This L.A.-built car has the chassis number at the top of the VIN tag, while examples built in Hamtrack, Michigan put the chassis number in the door jamb. Photos from Tom White’s restoration of the car can be viewed in the gallery."

Dude -

The D-500 option is NOT coded in the VIN number. Period.

The yellow CRL convertible, which later became yellow/black was a 361 4-bbl that became a Super D500 with an engine swap to a 383, and built to Super D500 specs. How do I know this ? I've known the (former) owner that had the car restored by Tom White, for over 20 years. The quote that Tom White decoded it as a Super D500 is a fabrication. Read the Sept 2007 issue of Hemmings Classic Car.

As dodge59 has previously requested and now me, Can someone (Ron, you know so much), please post a photo of a real 59 Dodge D-500 VIN and data plate so we/I can be completely schooled with proper references. (Sorry, I don't have a 2007 issue of Hemmings to confirm/deny the history of the yellow/black convertible.)

Thanks.

Ron: I found a previous thread where both you and Neil (D500Neil) declared a M314 VIN 59 to be a real D-500. Now I am really confused as in I expect the VIN to be M392...

M3141xxxxx is a Coronet built in LA. The dataplate had a code indicating D500. LA dataplate is a different animal from all others.

So you (Ron) thought M23 = D500 and Neil agreed (with no documentation - makes me crazy).

The source of my 59 Dodge D500 confusion is info in the 1959 Mopar parts catalogue which suggests that Ma Mopar had a plan that involved "9" for the Special (sporty) cars, including the D500. I would have expected real D500s to have VINs starting with either M392 (D500 built at Dodge Main) or M394 (D500 built at the LA plant).

LOL. From what I have now learned and seen, a) there are mostly fake D500s out there and b) real ones are worth so much that the owners would never lower themselves to actually hang out and post here.

So don't hold your breath.

Why is this discussion even happening ?

Everybody knows, ALL 59 Dodge convertibles and at least 50% of the coupes
were built and sold as Super D500 cars. Duh !
