This South Dakota car came to Finland 2018. It is going to be a very good driver but I am not going for 100% original.
Everything will be restored or new.
The colours are pearl white and seacoast aqua.
I mixed the colour myself and like the result very much. It is pretty close to its original tone.
I painted the body yesterday and it feels really nice to have it done.

LOVE the color!!! Perfect! Do you have the paint number/manufacturer for the seacoast aqua?

Hello Sid!

This color is certainly one of a kind.
I am gladly sharing:

100 parts GM Ermine White
50 parts Vw Beetle year 2000 Denim Blue
30 parts Saab Gn5 Olive Green
You can get these from every Mipa mixing shop.

They are all solid colors without clear warnish on. I paint in a garage with tons of dust everywhere so everything I paint is sanded with 1500 and 2000 and polished with a big
anglegrinder type polisher with 200mm wool pad.

I posted that picture below some time ago here. Resembles yours. This is how I plan to paint my 61 Fury, not sure yet if I go with black or white as the roof color. Yours looks so beautiful. You can hardly find a more nostalgic 50s color. Thanks again for the receip.

Ralf: Great photos documenting your work.

The fact that you flagged (painted) the rear differential gear carrier PN 1634 983 made me curious. That number doesn't exist in the catalogue but yet 982 and 984 do. Any ideas what the the 983 is all about?

Yep it is unusual with 3 as last digit but I have bumped into it a couple of times on the net.
It is the version with the larger 742 pinion shaft.
I should tell that all paint markings I have done are NOT of reliable proof for anything. I have tried to make them as right as possible
and that`s it.
The rear end is 3,18 but I can`t be sure that it is the one the car came with from the factory.
It would be interesting to know what the T stamped to the top of the carrier means?

Sorry. Can't help with the "T" but I would suggest that a 58 Firedome didn't come from the factory with a 3.18 to 1 crown/pinion (at least according to the part pdf that I have):

Your car is an exact twin to my '58 2dr Firedome, same color scheme and everything. Only someone painted mine pink later in it's life.

Soon is the interior ready and pictures are coming. The adjusting procedure of the doors/windows/locks is ok on the passenger side but the driver side is waiting for
a brand new latch. I already changed the latches to very good used ones from the back doors of an imperial but the driver side door was impossible to close in a
proper way (ouch) so I had to buy a brand new latch. These latches and strikers must be the worst of the entire us automobile history...
The roof rail seals are also a disaster..I didn`t even try the ones on the repro market. I used mustang 1965 ones...they seem to fit well but I can`t recommend this way
before I have got it tested on the highway.

Did you consider trying '67 Barracuda or B-body roof rail seals?

No , the reason I chose mustang seals is that I am a cheap fellow and happened to have two new kits hanging on the wall. They are really soft and nice and look good.

Could that 5 written on the inside of the dash stand for body dataplate Ah 5? I think this stands for standard heater Model 705.

Sorry but I am not a www tyre man. I honestly like black tyres better. That`s how the Lord meant tyres to look like lol ....furthermore the black ones are more affordable.

Also, the black walls have weight classification, speed classification and ensures safe driving.
Most white walls are really expensive crap and not suitable to active driving and road trips.

Ralf, thanks for showing your restoration of this rare car with the detailed pictures.
You have made a beautiful new 1958 long wheel base Desoto coupe.
Now to be proud of your work and enjoy driving I hope!
Even if the restoration is complete, please keep posting more detailed pictures of your car.
I like that you made a driving car, I also replaced my Imperials generator with an early style Chrysler alternator.
Steve.

Thank you all for the nice comments! I really intend to keep this and also to dare use it. So I put aluminium radiator , breakerless ignition , alternator , halogen headlights ,electric washer,
reinforced radial tyres , mudflaps , additional inner mud shields behind the headlight area ,underbody bitumen coating . So this car is not 100% "right" . And the body gaps are what they
are..

Sorry but I am not a www tyre man. I honestly like black tyres better. That`s how the Lord meant tyres to look like lol ....furthermore the black ones are more affordable.

That is funny, while you restored that beautiful car just like I would have done it (GREAT colors!) I think WWW are a MUST for these cars and the god of FL's wanted it that way.
WWW are, just like these cars, typical 50s and you will have a hard time finding a picture of a 58 senior Desoto hardtop from back in the day without whitewalls. Is there a 58 Desoto Firedome/Fireflite HT in the brochures w/o whitewalls at all?

He would need to shoot for Prime Minister of Canada first. We don't let Canadians run over here, they aren't crazy enough for us! I personally like to choose the tire based on the car. Not all of my forwardlooks look better with whitewalls. My '56 Savoy, '58 Coronet, '57 Windsor, '61 Lancer wagon and 300C will always have blackwall tires while I own them. But if I owned your beautiful Firedome, I would go with the whitewalls because they would compliment the white 2-tone really nicely. Diamondbacks are the best, use brand name radial tires, but are more expensive. Cali tires are the same, half the cost, but the white will yellow over time so you have to whitewash them. I fully understand your sentiment though as I'm not sure how much $$ they would cost to bring to Europe. My Firedome isn't wearing them at the moment either, due to cost, but it did look much better when I did have them on it.

By the way, this is what the original, 1-year only '58 DeSoto air cleaner looks like if you happen to stumble upon one. Just make sure it has the large opening on the bottom of it, as the much smaller Plymouth air cleaner can look similar in pictures.

Yes Nathan , some cars require www tyres ,others not. The main reasons for me are the bad reputation of the www tyres and their crazy pricing.
A guy I know here is trying his third set of www (coker or american classics) on warranty and they seem all to be oval.
By the way , have a look at the Finnish Prime Minister...that`s more like it....

Yeah, Coker is pure crap. If you like good radials, only purchase one of the two I mentioned. I don't have experience with good bias plys.

I don't have experience, but there's a 'premium' brand from Nokia, Finland of WWW radials, Kontio WhitePaw Classic, 205/75-14 with 2½" whitewall cost just €149,95 each.

Yes , I have heard of Kontio tyres. But do they have 215/75-14, because 205/75-14 would be way too small. I have 215/80-14 and this is minimum size I think.

I use 215/75R14 (Cokers). The next size of Kontio would be 225/75R14 with 2¾" WW. It cost €169,95 in Finland (1899 SEK in Swedish format).
Estimated availability March 31. Kontio official page says "coming 2019". Coming, coming..
