I wonder if that decode is the same for the Detroit-built 1958 Dodge?

If so,

Powerflite 2 speed automatic

Heater / Defroster

Power brakes

Car service (vehicle prep)

Dealer's own truck for delivery

Build on or around June 7, 1958

De Soto, Firesweep, Sedan

Monotone Black

Interior Trim Code 999?  999 is typical code for custom or special order.

Warning: this could all be totally wrong!

Mike is correct. It is coded as a sold car and the BDY code is Firesweep 4 Dr. Sedan. Is it a 6 Cyl car?

The 3 in 413 would be 6Cyl if it was a Dodge.

What does 607 signify?

607 is meaningless. It is not a code. That is why I needed to see the actual body plate. The 7 in that position is what is significant, stands for code 637 which is "route" which in this case means delivered by the dealers truck.

Is the car 6 or 8 cylinder?

Thanks Greg.  It was a lucky guess.  I knew that the 1958 De Soto Firesweeps rolled off the same assembly line as the 1958 Dodge.

The plate looks so similar, I thought it may have the same codes.

I don't think De Soto offered a six cylinder car in 1958 as Dodge did?

I thought the base engine for Firesweeps was a 350?

However, I know De Soto built fleet vehicles...perhaps they could be had with the six?

Lucky is good but the truth is that you spotted the similarity before I did! Good work, and thanks!!

While I don't pretend to know anything about Desotos, when I was looking for front end pot metal donors for my Regal, I noticed that Firesweep body plates were the same as Dodge. So, I took pics and documented a few of these carss. My findings seemed to agree with Neil's so no further action was taken. A few years ago I put out several requests for Firesweep owners to submit their body plate images. NO INPUT AT ALL.

DeSoto did offer a six cylinder model Firesweep in 1957 and 1958 - mainly for taxis. The 1957 Firesweep Six went into production in January, 1957, which is why the engine number prefix was changed. The 1957 Dodge Coronet 230.-6 cid six cylinder engine serial numbers had prefix D72 and in January it was changed to KDS : K - 1957 / D - Dodge / S - DeSoto. Total production of DeSoto S27 Firesweep Six 4 door sedans came to 139 units. No idea how many were built for 1958, but I suspect it was a little lower than 139.

If this car has the Getaway Six (at least that's what Dodge called it), that may go a long way to explaining the 999 trim code.

The data plate is from the black 58 ambulance seen recently on the interne

The owner has confirmed the car has the 350 V-8 and is checking the other code items like Powerflite etc

Interesting!  I guess the Memphibian group made that out of a sedan.

That data tag makes sense.

Mike. Thanks for the photo!

Thanks for starting this thread, Bob. Fun project!!
It was coded as a sold car so I wonder who actually ordered it. The conversion company? If so, easy to understand the 999, special order interior. Seems odd to me they would order a sedan rather than a wagon.

The owner should get the punch card.
