My 57 Dodge promptly shifts into reverse to back it out of the shop.

But it then takes 15 - 30 seconds to engage Drive and move forward. Does the same if I try 1st or 2nd gears instead. Once it engages, it drives just fine and is usually good for the rest of the day.

Thoughts?

This is usually caused by shrunken/hardened seals in the front clutch. The front clutch is used for all forward gears but not Reverse.

An additive like Trans-X or Lucas will soften the seals and restore function. If not, an overhaul is in the future.

WOW! I was skeptical of the claim on the Lucas bottle of "Results Are Usually Immediate". But after idling for 15 minutes after I poured it in, the car shifted properly into drive like it was new.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!
