I'm looking for help determining what would be the "correct" looking spin on filter for our cars. I know Mopar used the same part number #1851658 for many years even though the look changed from Black(with a forward look logo?), to white and blue (1967-71?), olive green (late 60's assembly line?) and then red white and blue (after 1972.) I've come across two pictures of the early black version. Does anyone have experience or a true original to validate what i'm seeing on the forwrad look type filter?

These were reproduced in the 90s, available from Mopar Performance and yes, the repros looked just like the one in your picture. Correct for FL cars 57/58+

Back then I ignorantly used them and threw them away. Should have bought 1000s for future sale!

Thanks for the tip, I think you're right, turns out the bottom picture is a P4529806, there is still some available on ebay for over $50 each. So is the top picture closer to correct?

Not sure, IIRC I've seen an NOS one many years ago, that looked like the MP Repro, could be it was a repro in a late 50s correct Mopar box, but why should they (Mopar) invent a new design? I believe they copied the original design and both are correct.

Sorry, and I understand why you want to do this, but when reading this it came to mind about politicians that appoint positions by politically correct gender selection rather then by the best person to do the job. (if it even matters) When it comes to oil filters I would rather have the best quality rather than the best appearance. But of course, sometimes they are both. I'll go to my room now.

Do what? Knowing how the correct oil filter looked for our cars? Yes, some people want a period looking 50s car, just terrible.

One could easily paint any oil filter black and ad a sticker, created from an original filter to make it look OE. For that reason I kept a section from an original filter. I'm not a 100% original guy (disk brakes and subtle mods) but this would be a nice little touch.
