I can only speak to 56 Dodges. I can think of 3 off the top of my head with the trunk-mounted A/C. All three were Custom Royals (2 were 4 dr sedans and one 4 dr Lancer). All three were also D500 cars the buyer had some bucks.

Based on the 56 Dodge pricing (see below), A/C represented a significant add-on (at $426 to $567) over the cost of the car ($3023 to $3200) (see below) (The D500 option was only about $175 by then)

If you look at old classified ads you can get a feel for how many as they make a point of mentioning it. Of course the hot states would have gotten it more.

A/C on my 1960 New Yorker wagon was $714 because you had to get the dual version. The car started out at $5131 and mine was about $6656 with the options.

According to Jeffrey Godshall:

1957 Dodge       7,429       2.2% of total production

1958 Dodge       4,689       3.3% "

1959 Dodge       6,687       4.3% "

I would expect that, generally as is with Dodge, the percentages increase from 1955 to 1961 because demand increases and prices drop.

I would also expect that, generally, the percentages increase from Plymouth to Imperial.

Mine has dealer installed Air-Temp AC. I am sure many cars were ordered by dealers without "factory AC" but immediately got the dealer installed unit. That makes the counts above a bit deceiving if we want to know how many cars were originally SOLD with AC units.
