Like a library... each part number had a card.

You probably got a package from the dealership with the good initial ones printed...  Part number, year make model applicability...   Want a part? look up the section. Is it in stock, how much, when to order more all the info there. 

Looks like this became an utter mess after a while.  Number of parts on cars exploded and you had to continue to maintain hundreds of thousands of cards.  I have examples into the 60's from the 40's.

When I worked for GM back in the 60's, all the parts were on microfiche and books updates were on microfiche if I remember right.
