Veteran Posts: 206 Location: Chattanooga | I know you could order the Adventurer 383 2x4 engine in any 1959 DeSoto, but I don’t remember seeing optional engine choices in 1959 Chryslers. Was it possible to order HP engines in Chrysler vehicles? I’m asking the question because there is a 1959 Saratoga with a 2x4 engine advertised on the internet. The seller says it is a 383 345 HP optional engine. The DeSoto 383 was a B block engine, but the Saratoga would have come with the RB block 383.

Veteran Posts: 206 Location: Chattanooga | Maybe I need to ask the question a different way. Was it possible to order a Windsor with a 4 barrel carburetor? A related question is was it possible to order a 413 engine in a Windsor from the factory?

Regular Posts: 62 | Carl Kiekhaefer took delivery of a 1959 Chrysler Windsor two-door hardtop that was factory-equipped with $427.15 in "SPEC. FEATURES", including the 380 hp, 413 or "300 E Engine" as was written on the MSRP label. The base price was $3,289, but options and special features pushed the total to $4,647.45. The Windsor was factory painted a two-tone combination of Radiant Red and Spanish Silver.

Location: North Australia | This is an interesting thread. The '59 Windsor sounds like a neat car. Would love to see a pic of that one. Now if the HiPo 413 was available in '60 in a Windsor, that would be something. That would make it faster than a F, being a SWB car. I can vouch for the 413. I rebuilt the engine in my Imperial, and it is an awesome little engine. I 'released' some power, by working the heads and original manifolds, and it is smooth, quiet and powerful. My engine serial No' is 930. Car built at the end of Nov '59. Steve.

Veteran Posts: 206 Location: Chattanooga | Carl Kiekhaefer Had a special relationship with Chrysler, and was involved with their racing program. I have never heard of the special ordered 1959 Windsor before this, but it sounds like a spectacular car. Does anyone have pictures of the car or know where I could get more information about it?

Obviously we know some special ordered cars were built, but please give us some actual references when you make such a claim.

Regular Posts: 62 | Carl Kiekhaefer and Charlie Strang basically ran Chrysler's racing program during the mid-1950s. With discounts on race vehicles and parts from Chrysler Corporation, Carl financed the balance of the racing operation through Kiekhaefer Corporation. Carl continuously demanded special racing parts ASAP and ran Burt Bouwkamp ragged in the process. Carl Kiekhaefer special ordered many Chryslers and Dodges. The 1959 Windsor is just one example. Paperwork once held by Carl's longtime secretary Rose Smiljanic was a treasure trove of information, but she was encouraged to return the files to Brunswick years ago and they are now lost in the bowels of Plant 10.

I sold some, but I read basically ALL 57-61 US car magazines, including the less popular ones like Speed Age and custom-car magazines. I just don't have the time to go all thru this to satisfie you. Sorry.
