I would guess that it is NOT factory. Looks like pink fibreglas encased in 3 mil (or thinner) polyethylene sheeting. Probably done with good intentions (heat and noise) but the poly is asking to catch on fire due to a back-fire or the like.

End result: Bad idea.

Yep. That hood insulation definitely falls into the category of it seemed like a good idea at the time. Otherwise looks it like a fairly decent car. I'm restoring a 58. Nothing is cheap on these cars. I'd expect they are probably in over 18K on this one.
