Have been driving the '59 Windsor for a couple of months now but third and reverse not in good shape. keep her at 35-40 in 2nd, or peg it to about 70, hit drive and coast on the long straights to go into town and don't park anywhere I have to back up. Shifts great 1st to 2nd. Question: will a '57-58 trans from a hemi work? change bell housing? I have a rebuilt one that's never been installed I picked up back in the early 90's..or do I just rebuild my other '59 torqueflite and then swap it out.

Thanks, Brian

Brian, the 392 hemi and the early big blocks use the same torque converter (172 teeth) so you should be able to pull your trans and replace it with one from a 392 Hemi. I believe you will have to re-use your bell housing that's already on your 383, so just pull the four bolts and slide your trans out with the torque converter, starter and bell housing on the car. The old trans has to come out either way, so get it on the floor next to your older Hemi trans and make a direct comparison. You may find some slight differences, first one I'd watch for is different shift cable connection at the trans.

'57 is air-cooled so there are no fittings for the cooler lines from the radiator, just use the '57 converter/bell. '58 should be a direct swap.

Were all '57 transmissions air cooled? I would think that if it was behind a 392 hemi, it would have been liquid cooled. My late production 1956 Imperial had a liquid cooled TorqueFlite trans. When did Chrysler drop the air cooled setup?

I can't find the definitive info that I hoped to answer this question with but I know that when I was looking for a cast-iron A-466 for my swap project (TF into a PF car), I wanted an air-cooled TF because I wanted to re-use my air-cooled 56 Dodge V8 torque converter. On that basis, I ended up with a 57 Windsor air-cooled TF (no oil ports for cooling lines). I think that the bigger Chrysler and Desotos (and maybe the performance 57-58 Dodge D500 and Plymouth Furys ) got liquid (oil cooled) torque converts.

I offer this as some evidence:

Thanks for the info. I've been looking at anything I can find on the internet but have found no definitive answers. I just found the stamped number on the side of the Case by the pan rail..17382270 but 1738227 is the only number that shows up and says it is a 1957. The bell housing does not have the screen as shown in the above picture. it does have the shift Cable attached though and it does have ports for the transmission lines.

thanks for the help,
Brian

I can tell you for certain that my '57 Windsors have air cooled transmissions and my '57 New Yorkers & 300C have liquid cooled transmissions. I can't say about the Saratoga, but I suspect that they were liquid cooled as well. They were just trying to save a couple bucks on the Windsors.

My 57 Windsor A-466 has 1736544K stamped on the pan rail. That number does not show up in the parts catalogue but 1736 546 does. So I think the 544K got superceded to 546. For your 17382270 might mean "0" = the first iteration. 1738 227 shows up in the parts manual as the 1957-58 P31 (Fury), S25, S26, C70, C73, C75 3 speed automatic Torqueflite.

If the bellhousing for your transmission has no screens it implies that the torque converter was/is liquid (oil to water heat exchanger) cooled. If you have ports on the left side of the transmission they would be further indication that the transmission (and torque converter) was liquid cooled (via a heat exchanger built into the radiator). The radiator should have had ports for the transmission oil lines as well.

That has been my assumption also (ASSUME...you know what that means)...I would guess (read assume) that its an Imperial transmission. I have seen the interchange books..I have them...but like has been stated, until they're side by side, what is different? I Can see that the Cable is different, the 59 has the wheel adjuster versus the early slotted braket design, but was not sure about bell housing interChange. Thanks to all for the information. Might be awhile before I Can aCtually attempt a removal and Comparison, a few or more months for sure...in the proCess of getting a new shop on the property going.
Thank you again,
Brian
P.S. my keyboard letter C is not working, so have to ut and paste.

.
Whatever I said before, the 1738 227 is the 57 New Yorker (C76) and Imperial (IM) TorqueFlite trans. It will be liquid cooled.
