In my on-going, but on again/off again, search for information about 1956 Dodge IBM and cowl data tag interpretations (e.g. for my 56 Dodge Custom Royal D500 sedan), I reached out (via email) to Mike Petersen who wrote the 350 page document "1955 Dodge - by the numbers". Mike compiled his information based on many sources including many copies of actual dealer invoices (that show the selected option with its code). I asked Mike about 1956 codes and he replied that he only worked with 1955 Dodge information. He strongly suggested that I buy his document from the Antique Automobile Club of America. Okay.

So I contacted the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) and Chris Ritter, their head librarian replied "Yes, we have Dodge by the Numbers in our collection. We charge $0.25/page for copies plus $10 for shipping. All of our staff is working remotely right now, but when we open back up (hopefully in early May), we can get you your copies." So good news/bad news.

In the meantime, some very nice un-named Forward Looker took pity on me and scanned a few pertinent pages from Mike's document so I could make some progress while waiting for the AACA to re-open and while I was in shelter-in-place mode. With those pages in hand, I have set about to compile/rearrange some of Mike's information and, in particular, trying to rationalize the 56 Dodge IBM card Accessory codes against the 1955 accessory codes. Spoiler alert: I only partially succeeded.

First thing is Mike almost exclusively worked with Detroit built 1955 Dodges and their invoices and IBM cards. By a stroke of luck, it appears that the Detroit-built 1956 Dodges used the same IBM cards and, it would appear from the few 56 Dodges that I have checked, the same or very similar option codes. This helps to explain a few (but not all) things.

My main buggaboo is that I have several copies of 56 Dodge IBM cards with "Accessory Groups" punched in Column 35 (and printed above ACC. GRPS) as 1, 4 and 7. But naturally, there are exceptions like IBM cards with 1 and 5 or 1 and 4 and one with just "9". My LA-built 56 Dodge has 1,4, 6 and 8. I still have no idea what that means.

The screen shots of my two Excel spreadsheets (so far) are shown below.

hi dave, the is the "book" I mentioned to you a while ago. so it seems that the aaca is the only place to get that article he wrote on the 55"s. I too will be contacting them too when they reopen

Dave: thanks for posting this sheet – it is very informative
I guess the code 347 has some mistake - twice written Power Seat instead Power Steering at one…
I have thought… what if your M1=8 means 348 = Power Steering and Brakes on your cowl tag?
What if the M1=7 mean 347 = Power Steering, Brakes and Seat on the South Carolina car cowl tag?
Does the SC car have Power Seat?
Maybe M3=7 mean 337 = Air Conditioning on the SC car… it has equipped with it…

I thought that my post would get your interest Igor. We should remember that the two cowl data tags that you refer to (originally posted by me) are for Los Angeles-built cars.

That said, I just checked my records and neither the SC car or mine have power seats. The main differences are the SC has Air Con and PS and PB and an 8 tube push button radio and my car only has PS and PB and no radio (radio delete when I got it).

I might have made an error in transforming Mike Petersen's info. In his list, he says:

341 Power Steering
344 Power Seat
345 Power Brakes (I know of a 56 CR sedan with 5 above the 34 in the IBM card and he does not have PS)
346 Power Seat and Power Brakes
347 Power Steering, Power Seat and Power Brakes
348 Power Steering and Power Brakes (like my car)
349 Power Steering and Power Seat

I will correct my spreadsheet and repost.

A possible explanation is the SC car left the factory with PS, PB and Power Seat (347) but at some point, it was converted to manual seats (maybe because of electrical issues??)

Thanks Dave! I got your correct spreadsheet.
I wonder: What the Power Windows option number would be:
302 (or 303) because it is located near the Solex Glass = 301: SG near EW on the cowl tag also;
342 (or 343) because PS and PB options nearby as well?

Good guesses on the Power and tinted Window options. I didn't see them until you made me look. See Rev 2 below. I also found a second Air Con code. For Rev 2 I've also eliminated the convertible top colour codes and the paint code references that I had in Rev 0 and Rev 1.

Not really. 377 is the single 1955 code for the combination of handbrake warning light and back-up lights in the 1955 Accessory group 354. By 1956, in the Convenience group, those two items are listed separately. In 1955, they also had separate codes of 372 Parking Brake Warning Light and 375 Back-up Lights. I think I got it right.

1957 Dodge Accessory Groups:

Thanks for the suggestion Igor but only two codes, 375 and 362 line up between 1955 and 1957. We don't have the 1956 codes but they seem closer to the 1955 codes, at least for Detroit cars.

Hello Dave, I have a couple questions to you – tell me, if you know:
What the «Solex Tinted Glass at Windshield only» number code should be?
Is it really that «Solex Glass» and «Power Windows» items locating it the same «30x» column?
What about the «Right Outside Rear View Mirror» number code as a single item?
I do not find a «Vanity Mirror» in your spreadsheet also…
Did the ’55-56 Dodges have a Power Antenna?

Igor: You have to remember that the codes that I have from Mike Petersen's "1955 Dodge - by the numbers" book are incomplete in the sense that I don't have the book at the moment, just a few pages.
I am negotiating to get a full copy but the AACA office is shuttered at the moment.

That said, in 1955, apparently:

301 = Dodge - Tint Safety Glass (no mention of Solex in 1955) (??)
302 = Power Windows front
303 = Dodge - Tint Safety Glass and Power Windows - Front
304 = Power windows - Front and Rear
305 = Dodge - Tint Safety Glass and Power Windows - Front and Rear

In the few pages that I have, I did NOT find a separate listing for just a Right Outside Rear View (Fender) Mirror. What I found was:

402 = Outside Mirror, Left side
408 = Outside Mirrors, left and right

Mike does not list an option code for the 1955 Vanity Mirrors. I am not surprised since they are simply clip-ons and would most likely be
bought at and installed at a dealer. He does list:

Vanity mirror, Not illuminated, PN 1455 169
Vanity mirror, Illuminated, PN 1450 318

I have a vanity mirror for my 56 Dodge but there is no Part Number (PN) on it. Nothing in the 56 Dodge Accessories brochure either.

Mike does not list an option code for any antennas. However, he does list this:

60" Radio Antenna PN 1622 018
90" Radio Antenna PN 1622 019
Radio Antenna Adapter Kit (to install an H-series antenna on a G-series car), PN 1627 091

(I don't know what H and G-series mean)

OK, thank you.
I just thought that something is missing
By the way, I guess the series G mean 1954 and H = 1955 model year
As stated Chrycoman here…

Engineering Department Model Years :

A - 1924-25 - 1942 - 1965
B - 1926 - 1946-48 * - 1966
C - 1927 - 1949 - 1967
D - 1928 - 1950 - 1968
E - 1929 - 1951-52 - 1969
F - 1930 - 1953 - 1970
G - 1931 - 1954 - 1971
H - 1932 - 1955 - 1972
J - 1933 - 1956 - 1973
K - 1934 - 1957 - 1974
L - 1935 - 1958 - 1975
M - 1936 - 1959 - 1976
P - 1937 - 1960 - 1977
R - 1938 - 1961 - 1978
S - 1939 - 1962 - 1979
T - 1940 - 1963 - 1980
V - 1941 - 1964 - 1981

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=73670&...

So, 1954 and 1955 Dodges have:
1) Manual Antenna
2) Manual Antenna – Extra Long

New tactic: Try the 1955 Dodge Order Codes from Mike Petersen's "1955 Dodge - by the numbers" book against the 1956 Dodge Price Reference Card listings.

Where there was no code, I have referenced the page that Mike Petersen shows the item (even he didn't have the code figured out).

I will be using these as reference when I go through Detroit (and maybe LA) 56 Dodge IBM cards to see how things line up. Presumably if you selected an Accessory Group the codes for the individual items in the Group do NOT show up as separate items on the IBM card.

I am getting an updated version of Mike's book in the next few days (it is sitting in Canadian Customs waiting for clearance since Saturday AM), and if there are changes I will update these lists

(My Sunday AM project):

This morning I found the info below in an envelope of info from Mike Petersen. I see that marked it up but I don't remember the details as to why. (Sorry )

Maybe the list is 1955 Plymouth?

Anyway, somebody (frwl or RDP) might be able to sort it out. I'm not going to try.
