Subject: Park,shift cable, and push buttons

I was thinking of putting a 413 M/T out of a 64 imperial into a 61 Plymouth or maybe a 383 out of a 63 300 into a 61 ply.
My question is will I be able to use the push button cables from 63 or 64 motors with the 61 ply dash push buttons?

The 727 PB shift cable will hook right up to the '61 shifter assuming the '61 has a Torqueflite but you will have to make provisions for the Park cable.

Thanks for response, I see what you mean about park lever. What have you guys done with park lever from 62 up trans used in a 61? Do you just abandoned it in dash? Use just the park brake? Or is there a clever way to actually use it?

On my '57 NY I made a box for the Park mechanism and mounted it under the dash. As long as the shift cable has the adjustment wheel, I believe it will work.

Can anybody tell me if 60/61 imperial/ New Yorker transmissions have the dash mounted park levers?
Are they any different in anyway than BB 60/61 auto Dodge Plymouth transmissions?

I thought that the PARK feature didn't show up until 1962 or 63?

1960 (I don't see a PARK lever by the Torqueflite buttons but I do see the parking brake on the end of the transmission - "Parking brake works on driveshaft"):

I don't think the park sprag was available on full-size Chrysler cars until 1963.  Anyway my 1960 Desoto has a 1964 Torqueflite 727B in it with the park sprag.  Since the push button assembly had no provision for the park lever, the restorers ran a cable with a chrome knob on it to the left side of the steering column.  To engage park, after putting the car in neutral, I push in on it and let the car roll slightly (maybe a foot) until it catches a cog.  Then I set the emergency brake.  When I get ready to drive the car, I just pull out on the knob to disengage it, release the emergency brake, and select Drive.  Not nearly as sophistocated as the one above, but a lot less conspicuous (see pic).

A potential problem with that setup is there is no spring to hold the cable in the engaged or disengaged position. The original park mechanism has a mousetrap spring that holds the cable in position.

As the cable moves to engage Park, the spring travels over center and pushes it in Park...same when the cable moves to disengage Park. Without the spring it's possible for vibration to engage Park while driving and not engage when still.

Recently installed 440, 727, driveline, and 8.75 rear end from a 71 NYer in my 61 Chrysler. My shop simply connected the stock parking brake mechanism in the 61 to the rear brakes in the 71 rear end. The shop also found a conversion kit so I can still use the push buttons with the 1971 727. I just don't have Park, but a 61 Chrysler didn't come with Park anyway....
