Extreme Veteran Posts: 443 Location: Beaumont TX | Does anyone know the exact length of a push rod for a 259 Poly, 1955. I am going to order some from Smith Brothers and need to be able to tell them the exact measurement. Is it better from me to say P27 engine or 259 V8 Poly? Veteran Posts: 148 Location: Mandurah, Western Australia | I think it is better to use the more direct description of 259 poly as it is common to both Dodge and Plymouth, basically a Dodge motor anyway. It looks like 241 and 270 used the same basic dimensions with only the bore varying. I cant help with the dimension as mine is still running, tho tired. Not sure where you would get it from as parts for these particular motors are not common like later poly engines. Veteran Posts: 148 Location: Mandurah, Western Australia | From my parts list the part number for 1955 Plymouth poly is 1557 134 but only reference on google was to Atlas Obsolte / Moparmall where could find nothing, but may be worth a call. Looks like the 56 length is different as a different part no. 1637 721. Found a possible source which asks for length, lists separately for 241 and 260, suspect 260 was the 56 model? Extreme Veteran Posts: 443 Location: Beaumont TX | Thanks Jim, I like the basic data page you show. I have seen it but didn't have a copy. I found the Kanter push rods and also some at Hagen auto parts. Hagen charges $18 for each push rod. I got Smith Brothers as a contact from Hot Heads and they will make any push rod you want, including adjustable push rods and they are less expensive I think in the long run. I just have to tell them the dimensions. I have a couple of mine that were damaged when I ran without oil so I don't know how much they are worn down. I think I can make a good guess but was hoping someone would know the real length. It is indeed very difficult to get parts for these engines. Big M has very good quality used parts but since I have some damage, I am thinking I should try some custom push rods. Thanks, sam | ||

Veteran Posts: 148 Location: Mandurah, Western Australia | No worries Sam, good luck with your rebuild. Here in Oz we tend to improvise as very expensive to get parts from USA. Salvaging parts from another motor would be my choice and failing that Big M, who I have found very helpful. I am currently putting together a P6 flathead for my 7 passenger and the motor is made up using parts from several, with new pistons and bearings, rebore and regrind. The original motor was extensively ruined by water ingress thru the previous owner running with a cracked head. | ||

Extreme Veteran Posts: 443 Location: Beaumont TX | I found the length of the push rods documented at Hagan.. Push rods are supposed to be 8-5/32 inches. I've measured mine and it looks like they are a little bit longer than 8-5/32 when I measure with a tape measure. I compared the lengths of all the old and other used push rods I have. I have one valve tapping on the driver side and I found one push rod that is 5/1000 shorter than the others. I also have one push rod that is 4/1000 longer than all the one's currently in the engine and I think this is the closest to the original length because push rods get shorter over time, they don't get longer. It looks to me like the difference between tapping and not tapping is 0.005 to 0.009. Then new push rods I'm going to buy will be the length of the longest one I have. | ||
