I'm looking at a used TorqueFlite transmission for a 1957 Dodge and have a few questions.

1) When you move the shifter cable in and out should I feel the "indents" as it goes from R to N to D, etc.? I don't feel anything like that but the cable does move in and out.

2) When turning the input shaft should the rear shaft with the parking brake drum turn as a direct connect between the two?

I've never had to buy a used transmission so if anybody has any tips on what to look for I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

1) There are detents inside the trans but they're not very noticeable because the shift cable won't tolerate stiff detents.

2) There is enough drag in the released clutches that the output shaft can turn with the input shaft.

A used auto trans is always iffy, only a teardown will tell the internal condition. Removing the pan can give an idea of condition i.e. fluid color and debris in the pan but shrunk/hardened seals won't show up there.

Hi
Just a small tip that I use when inspecting a trans that I may even use for parts...... I always pull out the front oil pump drive sleeve and see how much is left of the tangs that contact the front pump rotor. If they show significant wear you can count on the trans being a high miler. I've bought a few that have had the tangs worn almost halfway off, mind you it was intended for parts so it was no real concern. Just thought I'd mention that particular point. I wish you much luck with your intended purchase!!

I done went past a long time ago getting a used engine or transmission without looking at it as a builder. Also very skeptical, sorry, for some that are supposedly rebuilt. Seen many trans torn down that should be oily and are dry as a bone.

Turns out I got lucky and bought a good used transmission. Everything seems fine so far.
I agree about buying a used transmission/engine from somebody you don't know.
I paid $75.oo for a used transmission versus an estimate to R and R the existing one for $1500 to $1800. I thought it was worth a gamble of just my time to install it.
