I am interested in decoding 1955-56 Chrysler Jefferson Detroit Plant body tags, but there are some gaps…
1955 and 1956 Detroit Cowl Tags are identical, only 1956 letter row added codes T, U, V and W…
This example offered for sale on ebay…

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=74247&...

1955 Chrysler Windsor Deluxe Four Door Sedan
Serial Number W5572296 (W – Windsor Series, 55 – 1955 Model Year, 72296 – Consecutive Number)

MODEL 25 = Windsor Deluxe Four Door Sedan
PAINT 11 = Porcelain Green
TRIM 11 = Green Dot Pattern Nylon Cloth and Green Nylon
SCHED 601 = Scheduled on June 1, 1956
ITEM 0121 = 121th Windsor built that day

A1 = Manual Antenna
B5 = Power Brakes
D4 = Radio Music Master (without Rear Seat Speaker)
F4 = Heater
G1 = Solex Glass – All Windows
K5 = no idea
S8 = Powerflite Automatic Transmission and Power Steering (3 – Powerflite less Power Steering, 1 – Manual Trans less Power Steering)

Does anyone know something about K5 code?
I am guessing this is Accessory Group 5 = Safety and Custom both (1 – Safety only, 3 – Custom only)
Am I correct about trim code 11?
What the code H mean exactly?
Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Here is decoding of 1956 Chrysler New Yorker St. Regis 2 Door Hardtop posted by «jaggerman» earlier:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=45932&...

MODEL 46 = Chrysler New Yorker St. Regis 2 Door Hardtop
PAINT 309 = Tri-Tone Paint Scheme: Raven Black roof, Cloud White body above contour molding and Regimental Red body below contour molding
TRIM 21 = Gray Brocatelle Cloth and White Leather
SCHED 026 = Scheduled: on October 26, 1955 «OR» 26th day since production began (need confirmation)
ITEM 1372 = 72th New Yorker built that day (first 1301)

A1 = Manual Antenna
C4 = Power Seat 4 Way
D3 = Radio Music Master and Rear Seat Speaker
E2 = Power Windows
F4 = Heater
G1 = Solex Glass – All Windows

BODY NO. 1866

Question 1: What does the SCHED 026 actually show?
Question 2: What does the «9» above SPL-FO column mean?

The 1956 New Yorker St. Regis IBM card posted for decoding by «Bporter» a year ago…
This car has same model, paint, trim; it was scheduled (built) on same day (SCHED 026) with car described above, has nearer ITEM (1372 vs. 1376) and has BODY NO (1866 vs. 1872)

Decoding the IBM card (available in this link as well):

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=71717&...

Upper Row:

46 = MODEL AND BODY TYPE = New Yorker St.Regis 2 Door Hardtop
309 = PAINT = Cloud White upper, Regimental Red lower and Raven Black roof color colors
21 = TRIM = Medium Gray Brocatelle and White Leather
1 = DRIVE = Left Hand
026 = SCHEDULE NO. = 26th day since 1956 model year production is beginning (same in lower left corner of pic. – OCT 4, 1955)
1376 = SCHEDULE ITEM = 376th car built that day

Bottom Row:

3 = TRANS = PowerFlite 2speed Push Button Automatic Transmission
1 = GEAR RATIO = 3.36 to 1 Rear Axle Ratio (standard on the New Yorkers)
7 = RADIO = Hi-Fi Phonograph, Radio MOPAR Model 844 Music Master (6 push buttons) and Rear Seat Speaker
1 = ANTENNA = Manual
4 = HEATER = Conventional Type, Hot Water

ACCESSORY GROUPS:

Safety Group (not stamped – it is a standard equipment on the New Yorkers) which includes:
Lights – Automatic Rear Door Switch
Lights – Back up
Light – Glove Box
Light – Hand Brake Flasher
Light – Luggage Compartment
Safety Cushion Dash Panel
Windshield Washer
Prismatic Mirror

3 = Custom Group:
Custom Steering Wheel
White Side Wall Tires
Rear License Plate Frame
Inside Prismatic Mirror

5 = Convenience Group
Sun Visor Vanity Mirror
Solex Tinted Glass
Left Outside Rear View Mirror

9 = Power Group
Power Steering only. The car is not equipped with Power Windows and Power Seat. Power Brakes is standard.

8 = TRACER = no info. A delivery route, probably.

The owner had not cowl tag, so I can guess following info that should be there:

MODEL 46 = Chrysler New Yorker St. Regis 2 Door Hardtop
PAINT 309 = Tri-Tone Paint Scheme: Raven Black roof, Cloud White body above contour molding and Regimental Red body below contour molding
TRIM 21 = Gray Brocatelle Cloth and White Leather
SCHED 026 = Scheduled: on October 26, 1955 «OR» 26th day since production began (need confirmation)
ITEM 1376 = 76th New Yorker built that day (first 1301)

A1 = Manual Antenna
D7 = Radio Music Master and Rear Seat Speaker plus Hi Fi Phonograph
F4 = Heater
G1 = Solex Glass – All Windows (this item was included in Accessory Group #5 – Convenience)

BODY NO. 1872 (if I saw correctly – Thanks to Dave «56D500boy»)

This car is not equipped with Power Seat and Power Windows; so «C» «E» columns are empty;
If the Power Group would be designated «7» instead «9», this car besides power steering (PB – standard) have had power windows and seat, although these items stamped on the cowl tag separately…
As same reason, the cowl tag should not have «9» above SPL-FO column on it (as on the previous example), I guess… or NOT?

I am looking at a 1955 Chrysler Windsor in a couple of days. Can someone help with decoding the fender tag so I can see what matches with the car as it sits?

Thanks, James

Model is 22
Paint is 1 (?Black)
Trim is 35
Scheduled is 208 (?Feb, 8th 1955)
Item is 124
{there may be a "0" to the right of item, hard to tell from the sellers photo}

One the Alpha line I have:
D=4
F=4
G=2
K=5
S=3

SPL-PO has 7064 under it.

Thanks, James.

Hello James.

MODEL 22 = Windsor Deluxe Nassau 2 Door Hardtop
PAINT 1 = Black
TRIM 35 = White Leathercloth and Gray Block Pattern Fabric
SCHED 208 = Scheduled on February 08, 1955
ITEM 0124 = 124th Windsor Deluxe built that day

D4 = Radio Music Master (without Rear Seat Speaker) - 6 push button
F4 = Heater and Defroster
G2 = Solex Glass – Windshield Only
K5 = no information; I guess it’s a Convenience Group (need a confirmation) that contains:

Sun Visor Vanity Mirror
Solex Tinted Glass (in your case windshield only)
Left Outside Rear View Mirror

S3 = Powerflite Automatic Transmission

No power steering, no power brakes, no power windows and no power seats…
I guess you missing the A1 option on the tag that means a Manual Antenna…
You can help me to know better, if you would show (post) the pictures of the car and the cowl tag…

Some optional codes describing by owner

Again:
(1) solex glass – viewable
(3) music master radio – does not
(4) heater – does not too…
(9) power steering – yes. It has separately code, but it was only with power steering (3) or (4) see above…

Going through the BAT photos, etc is fascinating.

Well bought at US$28,000. Not perfect but easily taken there with a little extra work.

President Harry Truman’s 1955 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe 4door Sedan:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=75765&...

Some corrections to the Daimler Chrysler Production Record Sheet:

Specified by Daimler Chrysler items are highlighted by yellow from left to the right:

1 = Electro Touch Tuner with Rear Seat Speaker and Foot Control (they forgot to specify the R/S Speaker and Foot Control)
4 = Heater
1 = Solex Tinted Glass at all Windows
8 = Kelsey Hayes Wire Wheels
3 = 4ply White Side Wall Tires
3 = Custom Accessory Group

They did not specify next items, highlighted by red, but the car has equipped with them (maybe they forgot it); from left to the right:

5 = Air Conditioning (original lettering – REFRIGERATOR UNIT)
5 = Power Antenna (it's more like a 5 than a 1 – Manual Antenna)
4 = Power Seat 4way (original lettering – ELECTRIC SEAT ADJUSTMENT)

Finally, highlighted by blue, is a power windows item (original lettering – WINDOW LIFTS) – its space is empty, but I see a power window switch on every door…

PAINT 99 = Special non-standard Geranium Red Paint
TRIM 50 = Tan Leather
SCHED 412 = Scheduled on April 12, 1956
ITEM 1901 = First 300B built that day

A1 = Manual Antenna
B – empty space = Power Brakes – Standard Equipment; does not stamp
C4 = Power Seat 4 Way (as a part of Power Group, code 7)
D3 = Originally equipped with Radio Music Master with Rear Seat Speaker (7 Push Button); but the car has more expensive 5-button Electro Touch Tuner (Town and Country) Radio…
E2 = Power Windows (as a part of Power Group, code 7)
F4 = Hot Water Heater
G1 = Solex Glass at All Windows
M – empty space that says no A/C, but the seller stated that A/C is Factory Installed (this item should be M5, if the car has Factory A/C);
S6 = Torqueflite 3 Speed Automatic Transmission and Power Steering (Power Steering as a part of Power Group, code 7)

Very impressive car, but something wrong with 100% originality…

This picture was taken from the link on «Forwardlooks in old pictures/postcards» thread on page 314:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=14389&...

This is «Airporter» Long-wheelbase 1956 Chrysler New Yorker:

MODEL 45 = Chrysler New Yorker Four Door Sedan
PAINT 05 = Stardust Blue
TRIM 42 = Medium Blue Sculptured Brocatelle and Dark Blue Petit Point Nylon
SCHED 113 = Scheduled on January 13, 1956
ITEM 0295 = 95th or 295th Sedan built that day

Letter options:
F4 = Heater and Defroster
G1 = Solex Tinted Glass

SO-A702 = Special order Car: Probably shipped to Armbruster-Stageway, Fort Smith, Arkansas for modify to «Airporter»
11825 = Body Number

Hard to see «9» above «B» in the letter-options line;
The letter «B» means Power Brake Booster unit:
«5» above «B» stands out Power Brakes on the Windsor line;
New Yorker, 300B and all Imperials have Power Brakes as standard equipment, so there is no «5» above «B»;
I guess «9» above «B» in this case means Power Front Disc Brakes, which was standard on the long-wheelbase Crown Imperial Sedans and Limousines
It would be makes sense for that heavy-weighted car…

The 1956 Chrysler 300 B Options only – it is not 1956 models full listing, unfortunately;
The digital codes shows after slash «/»;
It will be very helpful further…

Model and Body Type on your card is 251 – Windsor Deluxe (2), 4 Door Sedan (5), no idea about last (1);
Paint 302 = Platinum roof and body color and Falcon Green insert color;
Trim 48 – I have never seen this trim code ever! I thought that I have full ’55 Chrysler upholstery listing! Do you know what this upholstery has named correctly?

Schedule Item 0011 = eleventh car built that day

Now, the lower row:

GEAR RATIO 8 (or 6); 1955 Chrysler has five final drives: 3.36, 3.54, 3.73, 3.91 and 4.10;
I know the codes only two of these: 1 = 3.54, 2 = 3.36; what ratio your car has?
REF. UNIT 5 = Yes, your car has equipped with factory A/C;
WINDOW LIFT 2 = Power Windows – front and rear (7 – front only);

Yes, that’s true Dave: the paint code 12 is a Shantung Green – Solid Color;
The trim code 20 is a White Leather bolsters with Gold Nylon Boucle inserts like on the pictures below

In my humble opinion, it’s weird color combo: green body over white / gold upholstery…
Can you post the pictures of your car?

Unfortunately, I have not a picture (chip) of the trim code 20 from ’55 Chrysler Upholstery Book;
But I’ve found in my database a picture chip of trim code 21;
It has similar White Leather bolsters but it has Green Boucle insert (instead Gold in the code 20)
Could you post the cowl tag picture, please?

Have a read on this how-to-post-photos primer:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=64340&...

Photos need to be .jpg, not iPhone .jpeg. They must be <250kB (1024 x 768 is a good size)

Good luck.

You can test your posting skills in the "TEST" section.

PAINT 12 = Shantung Green
TRIM 20 = White Leather and Gold Nylon Boucle
SCHED xx8 = can’t see what date this car was scheduled on
ITEM 1467 = probably 67th New Yorker built that day

D8 = Radio Music Master and Rear Seat Speaker, including Antenna

G1 = Solex Glass – All Windows

Also cannot see an “M” slot – for A/C;
An “S” slot:
S8 = Powerflite Automatic Transmission AND Power Steering
S3 – Powerflite Automatic Transmission LESS Power Steering

SPL-FO is a Special Foreign Order – 89913 or 9913;
Your car was built for special order or for export; No exact info what does it mean yet…
Below SPL-FO in the right lower corner of the tag – the body number showing (087 or 687) – cannot see a whole number;
It is a number built for each New Yorker Hardtop by number, starting from 1001 and up.

A couple of more pictures that Alex (A1gio2) decided to post – Thanks a lot Alex!
Now, the final cowl tag deciphering may look like this:

MODEL 42 = New Yorker Deluxe Newport Hardtop Coupe
PAINT 12 = Shantung Green
TRIM 20 = White Leather and Gold Nylon Boucle
SCHED 228 = Scheduled on February 28, 1955
ITEM 1467 = probably 67th New Yorker built that day

D8 = Radio Music Master and Rear Seat Speaker, including Antenna
F4 = Heater
G1 = Solex Glass – All Windows
K3 = Custom Accessory Group including: Windshield Washer, Custom Steering Wheel, Left Outside Rear View Mirror, Exhaust Pipe Deflectors
S8 = Powerflite Automatic Transmission and Power Steering
SPL-FO 9913 = Special Foreign Order
BODY NUMBER 2987 = 1987th Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe Newport Hardtop Coupe built; Overall 1955 NY Newport production is 5777 units

Not often K3 option appears on the ’55-56 Chrysler tags;
The build card (broadcast sheet) of your car would be very helpful to confirm that!
Do you have a build card?

1955 Chrysler and Imperial Accessory Groups Chart;

Windsor Deluxe has two groups that might be stamped below letter “K” on the cowl tag:

K1 – Safety Group;
K3 – Custom Group;
K5 – Safety and Custom Group both;

New Yorker Deluxe might have the Custom Group only:

K3 – Custom Group;

Imperial has not Accessory Group; it has that equipment as standard… so, the “K” slot is always empty

If you have a built card, please let me know for confirmation “K” options…

.
Thank you Robert! It is definitely interesting data plate!

MODEL 25 – Windsor (2) Four Door Sedan (5)
PAINT 201 – Raven Black Body Colour and Cloud White Roof and Insert Colour
TRIM 38 – Originally Gray Petit Point Nylon and Gray Shield Embroidered Jacquard, currenly reupholsterd in all-vinyl
SCHED 006 – Sixth Day of Production (as seller said) – it seems September 12, 1955…
ITEM 0382 – 382th car built that day (not as stated by seller “a 38th car”, he didn’t see a last “2”)

A1 – Manual Antennae
B – blank – Manual Brakes Standard (5 would be Power); aftermarket Cadillac PB was added
C – blank – Manual Seat Standard
D3 – Music Master Radio (less expensive) without Rear Seat Speaker
E – blank – Manual (Crank) Windows Standard
F4 – Heater with Defroster
G2 – Solex Tinted Glass at the Windshield Area Only
H9 – Sun Cap Visor (incl. Drip Rail Moulding) and Side Bumper Guards “Wings”; but no bumper guards – maybe removed?
K3 – Custom Accessory Group (I guess) including:
- Rear License Plate Frame
- Electric Clock
- White Side Wall Tires
- Front Bumper Guards (again)
- Custom Steering Wheel (see a broken chrome horn ring)
- Exhaust Pipe Extension

S4 – Torqueflite Transmission and Power Steering (already not sure)

Above SPL.-FO.:

6 – Delivery Route (probably); I’ve seen 1, 4, 5 and 6 in this slot, so it might be a Route
1 – Undercoating
7 – Light Package including:
- Back Up Lights
- Luggage Compartment Light
- Glove Box Light

The last “1” and “7” digits are present on the Windsor tags only. Never seen their on NY, 300B or Imperial

Below SPL.-FO.:

1396 – it is a BODY NUMBER; 396th Windsor built (while by the VIN it is a 351th car built). Not bad for six days of production.
