I just bought this '56 Fury. I found it in my local Craigslist and picked it up. Gary Grossich might recognize it, as it was owned by a big forwardlook collector in Bloomington. Pretty rare to get power steering, power brakes, & dual rear antennae on a '56 Plymouth. Still has it's black plates, gold air cleaner, power brakes, power steering, bumper wings, tachometer & pink slip, but is missing the motor, trans, dual rear antennae, & all the side trim except the little front arrow connectors. So if anyone knows where to get some the trim, I would appreciate it. The passenger side window is also cracked so I'll need a replacement for that too, but fortunately, the front & rear windscreens are both good. VIN number is 22288763. Anyone know how to figure out if this is a valid Fury VIN?

I'm not going to keep it the banana yellow color. Not sure if I want to paint it off-white either. I'm considering painting it black or maybe pine green, but not sure. The fact that it's missing the original motor gives me an excuse to use something else. But since it has power steering, I don't think the exhaust will fit well with a Chrysler hemi motor in there. I'm considering installing a 325 Dodge hemi into it with a torqueflite trans. What do you think? Too bad I just recently sold my NOS '56 Fury fabric that I had. It figures that as soon as I sell it, I would want it back....

I've never seen this side trim at the front of the fins before. Has anyone else seen it? It's hard to see, but it has 6 or 7 ribs in the back of it.

I was thinking I would have the first black '56 Fury, but I just saw this for sale on Hemmings.

Congrats on finding and buying the Fury. Too bad about the missing 303. There are probably Canadian 56 Dodge Custom Royals up here with the basis 303 V8.

No sure what that chrome fender/fin cap is. Doesn't look stock to me.

An example 56 Fury (with no cap):

It arrived at my house this morning. I pulled a 5 gallon bucket of dirt & leaves out of the trunk and there's almost that much inside the car too. This car doesn't seem like it's from S. Cal because of all the mud on everything and the fact that there were huge tire chains in the trunk for driving in the snow. One good thing was that within the dirt, I found one nice Fury emblem and all the missing trim corners. There was also one short piece of rear vertical trim, the push button bezel, glove box door, power steering pump and the fuel door, still with its gold trim on it. There was one other piece of gold trim, probably from the door, but it was mangled beyond recognition, and missing half of it. I dug out a crusty "Hollywood" steering wheel from my stash and loosely mounted it on. I didn't bolt it on yet because I need to repair the turn signal first and find my other extra parts for it. I'm pretty sure I purchased a "Power Steering" version of the horn ring a long time ago too, so I need to dig that out. That power steering horn is quite rare.

I think my goals for it right now are to get it cleaned out and cleaned up, and then fix all the brakes, latches, hood attachment & steering so I can move it around easier.

Here is a closer picture of the fin trim. It's really odd because it fits the fin really well and is made from pot metal. I can't think of another car that has this style of fin at the front except for the '56 Dodge.

Edit: Someone on facebook pointed out that this is trim from an upper line station wagon. That makes much more sense now.

The turn signal cam was missing from this car so I didn't want to bolt the new steering wheel onto it until I had it properly all together. The '55-'56 setup is different than the '57-'59, but fortunately, I had a '56 Chrysler steering column that I had saved from a car that was parted. There are quite a few parts to this thing that all have to come together to make it work. The little bar goes across the arm to keep it from popping out from the switch button. Trying to piece this together from parts on Ebay would be almost impossible unless you could get an entire assembly. I'm just glad that I can bolt the steering wheel onto it now.

Another neat '56 turns up! This one is a pretty big project, but it's worth it.

IMO, the '56-58 Furys look best in black, for the way it sets off the gold trim.

Nice car. Definetly has lots of potential. I’m partial to green but think the black looks best too. Like “57burb” said,It really highlights the gold trim.

Forgive my ignorance on 56 models, but what do the bumper wings mentioned look like? I tried searching photos of more 1956 furys but didn’t see any with bumper wings. I’m assuming the wings bolt on the ends of the bumpers like the 57-58 cars and sweep upward?

Right, what Gary said. Compare the sides of the back bumper to the front bumper.

I replaced the right front wheel with the spare from the Belvedere as this one was trash. The drum looked more like an old hag's corpse than a brake drum. Would have made a good Halloween prop.

I cleaned up the outside and, with a lot of effort, cleaned off most of the hard water deposits on the windows. I got it off half of the rear window trim, but I still need to clean the rest of it. I also put the headlights together after repairing the left bucket, installed new hood springs & mounted the hood, fixed the trunk latch & aligned the trunk lid, aligned the right door latch so I could get it to close properly, and replaced the tail light assemblies & trunk handle. I can't roll up the driver's window, I'm guessing because the door is dented in so badly. Not sure how to relieve it with the window in the downward position, but I'll give it a try once I get the door panel off.

I attempted to install the trim on the fender last night, but when I tried to loosen the front connector, the weak spot weld holding the post to the trim quickly snapped off. That connection is so weak that if there is any resistance at all to rotation, it's going to snap. Not sure what I am going to do about it. I am tempted to try JB weld, but not sure how successful that will be. Trying to spot weld it back on may affect the front face of the trim quite a bit. Whatever I decide, I will be using a stainless stud instead. I'll need to take most of the large dents out before I can install the other trim too. I only have enough trim for the majority of one side at this point and only the aluminum for the doors.

If it's the stainless steel spear tip that broke, reproductions are available from an individual Mopar enthusiast for about $75 a pair. Let me know if you want his email address. I bought a pair from him recently and I think he had a few left.

Thanks guys for the info on the bumper wings. I was expecting front and rear wings, they are much more subtle than the 57-58 style. So are they bolt on pieces that attached to the standard bumper or is the bumper special and one piece?

“PowerFlite”,I had seen a set of 56 Fury gold aluminum trim on Craigslist about 6 months or so ago. I think it was in Los Angeles. I checked again for you but can’t find it again. I’m guessing it sold.

If I remember correctly, the rear "wings" on the '56 Plymouth are bolt-ons covered by the rear bumper guards so the seams don't show.

You must be correct. I see holes in the wings for the the bumper guard bolt.

I believe they were available across the board. I have seen them on an original Savoy 2dr hardtop. But I have never seen them on any Plaza, and usually just on the hardtops. But it is more likely that people who bought those cheap cars didn't care to purchase such frivolities like bumper wings.

I cleaned out the inside of the car last night. Pulled off that nasty cloth stuff he added on the back. The seat is still nasty, but at least it's mostly clean now. I found the 2nd Fury badge under the rear seat, so that was nice. The Fury badges are in almost perfect condition too, unlike most of the other chrome on this car. This car doesn't have a lot of rust, but that darn rubber mat caused the front floor pans to rust out. The rears are perfectly clean. Keep that in mind if you plan to use those things. I'll need to find some good sheet metal for it.

I didn't notice it before but the Fury body number is in the top center of the firewall, above the heater box. It is number 404-E1111. So it's the 111th Fury built. Pretty early build. I was told by the Fury club that it wasn't previously registered and is the 9th known registered vehicle left out of 155 with about 72 possible unregistered vehicles out there. How he came up with this number is unknown to me.

These are the tags from Fury number 24 that was parted out at Frenchies auto parts.

This Fury body number is interesting, and I'm curious about the first digit if the last three are the production number. My parts car is 404-E-4724, and according to this thread I assume it means mine to be
the 724th Fury built. Since the total production number is 4,485, how are the later units marked?

I'm also curious if the list of all known existing Furys can be downloaded?

The list comes from the Golden Fin Society. The first digit is also used, it's just that the first Fury started with 1001. I don't know why they din't like 0001, but they didn't like the 0 at the start. So your parts car would be the 3724th Fury out of 4485.

I worked on the dash to remove that awful shag on the radio face. I also swapped the radio out for a much better one. The old one might have worked, but its buttons were in terrible shape and it looked bad. I was thinking of swapping to the newer style speaker grille, but changed my mind and just cleaned up the one that was in it. The face of the plastic gauges are really hazy and probably require polishing to fix. Fortunately, the tach face is glass so it just needed to be cleaned. I put the mat back in as the damage is already done to the floor and it prevents me from getting tetanus while working under the dash. Just a simple clean up job really, as I am sure this won't be the last time I mess with it. Everything will eventually need to come out to re-paint the tan color on the dash.

I am very pleased that I was able to find and purchase a power steering horn button & ring for the '55-'56 Hollywood wheel. These things are very rare and difficult to find so it wasn't an easy task. But since this car originally came with power steering, I wanted it to have the right parts on it. Once it arrives here, I'll repaint the center emblem so it looks better.

Congrats (and condolences). Now you've started on the slippery slope of never ending improvements. Improve one thing, it makes another thing look bad. Improve the 2nd thing, a 3rd thing will look bad, and so on.

But definitely congrats on scoring those inserts. Nice find.

It just occurred to me that this car has a "Powerflite" emblem on the back of it. '56 Fury's aren't supposed to have that emblem, and my white one doesn't have it. But this car is a very early build, so it could be different. I was scrolling through the golden fin society pictures and found a rear shot of the "reportedly oldest Fury still in existence" and what do you know - it has a "Powerflte" emblem on it too. So I guess this emblem is original to the car after all. I wonder when they stopped putting it on there. Maybe the same time that they changed to the "Plymouth" speaker grille? Anyone know for sure?

I picked up a pair of rear antennae bezels & lower mounts for the '56 Plymouth that were reproduced by Richard Main. I wanted to get more sets, but I hesitated and ended up with the last set he had. My Pink Belvedere has a makeshift job on it, but this Fury has nothing, so they'll go onto this car.

I'm currently thinking that I'm going to paint this car purple. But I would rather leave it yellow than to paint it white again. I'm also thinking of installing a Dodge 325 hemi motor with gold valve covers & air cleaner. That seems more interesting to me than a 318 poly. A Chrysler hemi is out though, because I don't think I could make the exhaust work with a power steering box.

Have you found the silver stainless trim that goes around the gold sheet trim?

I got a lot of those pieces from the Fury that I parted out, but some of them are in bad shape, so I could use more if you know of any.

Yeah, I haven't really settled on a color scheme yet, but I've got plenty of time to decide.

I purchased a gold plated hood ornament for this car. I'm a little afraid to put it on though, because it might attract more attention from thieves. I'm not sure someone would want to steal it, but it makes me a little nervous. I'll just hang onto it until the car is ready to drive.
