I’m finally getting around to starting the refresh on the factory engine out of my 1958 Fargo Sweptside.
2 of the pistons were badly stuck, but with some soaking and tapping with an oak dowel, they both eventually freed up and came out.

I know that the 2 v8 options in 58 were a 303, or a 313; what is the best way to determine which one I have.
I believe this engine has been rebuilt once, so would measuring the cylinder bore tell me the engine size?

Being a Canadian truck (Fargo) my understanding is that these Canadian blocks were longer than their US counterparts; is this correct?

And finally, where would be a good source to get things like a full gasket set for this engine?

What colour would have been factory correct on a 1958 dodge v8 engine?
I see traces of silver on my engine, but also faint traces of a light blue on my rocker covers.

There should be a pad on the right front of the motor that will reveal a stamped code. That will tell you what year & size of motor you have. But yeah, the bore size was the only real difference between them as far as I know. You could also measure the bore size because there is a 60 thousandths difference between them. As long as it wasn't bored more than .06", you should still be able to discern which is which. 303 size is: 3.8125" stock, and 313 is 3.875 stock.

I've never heard that the blocks were longer. Why would they do that?
Rockauto has gasket sets available.
The motor would have been painted silver from the factory.

The code stamped on the pad is KV-182 62C
Can anyone decipher that for me?

Todd might be referring to the Canadian Dodges that got the 251 cu in flat head sixes, i.e. the longer Chrysler block.

Easy to confuse things! :-)

The Hemis were silver, I'd assume the A Polys at that point were also.

That longer block , shorter block business came from the flat head six world , Yankee sixes were around 2" shorter in overall length as opposed to the Canadian version which was based on the Chrysler/Desoto block. When Chrysler established the Windsor engine plant in 1938, it was decided to only use the "long block" for all Canadian-built engines. That went right through until the 1959 model year. In '60 the Slant six made it's debut. With regards to your Polysphere the 303 was really a 302.5 not to be confused with the Yankee '57 301 which had the same bore as a 318 (3.91") but used a much shorter stroke at 3.125" . The stroke on yours should be 3.31" for both the 302.5 or the 313. As far as your question about gaskets Fel-Pro FS7734PT2 is the part number for the ful gasket set for the Polysphere V-8. I will soon be starting one myself, mine is a '58 vintage in a Dodge Custom Suburban wagon. If you're lucky and it is a stock bore 313 and the cylinders will allow it all you'd need to do is bore it to 3.91 " and you've got a 318 ....which is exactly what happened at Windsor on the eve of the signing of the AutoPact in'65 .....313's became 318's ....it was a matter of resetting the tooling and running the blocks through again.
About 25 years ago I rebuilt a 302.5 and I successfully bored the block out to 3.91" .... a hundred thou.....we did it in three cuts and I still had acceptable cylinder wall thickness! Its still running fine and I certainly haven't babied it. Check the right front of the Cylinder block for the Casting number for either the 302.5 or the 313 should be 1676329 (usually only the 302.5's had this number from my experience) Many 313's came cast with 1737929 which is the same casting that was used for 318's .
