Not sure about the shifter pattern DNR21? 318? In a Fury? I guess so. 361 in the Sport Fury but V-800 318 in the non-Sports. (??!)

I believe the push button sequence D,N,R,1,2 is correct for the 1959 Plymouth’s. I’m not sure why the did it that way in 59,it was usually R,N,D,1,2 on other years with torqueflite

Did you mean RND21 was the more usual? (Not RND12)

In the 1957-1958 Plymouth’s and 1957-1959 Dodges,DeSotos Chryslers,Imperials with torqueflite the sequence is R,N,D,1,2. Im not sure why plymouth went with the sequence they did for 1959.

The R,N,D,2,1. Seems to have started in 1960 models. I know Dodge,Plymouth,DeSoto and Chrysler have that sequence starting in 1960.

Sorry have to disagree. As early as the first 1956 Torqueflites, the shifter box sequence and the internal shifter pattern was RND21

I’m talking about the physical layout sequence of the push buttons on the dash controls. You don’t have to take my word for it. Look at some photos of the 57-58 Plymouth’s 57-59 Dodges DeSotos and Chrysler’s with torqueflite. They are all R,N,D,1,2 until 1960.

For some reason I can’t attach photos here so they show. Maybe someone here could post some photos of the above mentioned push button dash units.

I thought you were talking about the physical pushbutton layout on the dash, not the mechanical sequence.

All this talk about push buttons made another question come to mind. I recall that on 1957 Dodges with torqueflite you could start the car by pushing the neutral button in further. I think 58 had that too. Was this a Dodge only setup?
If so,Anybody know why other makes didn’t get it?

This 57 Dodge Sierra wagon dash is one example of many 1957 Dodge, Plymouth,Desotos, etc. The way I look at it, in a clockwise manner, it's R-N-D-2-1.

:)

I look at each row of buttons from left to to right, like you’d read sentences in a book. R,N,D,1,2 I guess it’s all in how you look at it.

I look it the RND21 way because I understand how the shifter works both at the buttons and at the transmission end.

To answer the neutral start push button question, I think that it was just the Chryslers and Dodges and not the Desotos and Plymouths

"That is a good guess. The 1739 173 Torqueflite shifter box with reverse and starter switches were for the 57-58 Dodges and Chryslers but NOT the 57-58 Desotos (which is weird). The 1739 173s have the tang at the end of the neutral slide to push on the start switch but the Desoto box on eBay does not."

You also need a Vacuum safety switch so you can't grind the starter into the flywheel if the engine is running. Only Chryslers and Dodges had those:

Chrysler (yes) (slide the scrolling bar at the bottom of your screen to the right to see the N-Start illustration)"

Desoto (no):

Dodge (no):

Thanks “56d500boy”,as usual, you’re a wealth of knowledge. You even added photos of the unique neutral/start push button mechanism! So was this mechanism standard on all 57-58 Dodges and Chryslers with torqueflite,or was it an extra cost option?

I really don't know. I am guessing that it was "standard" on the 57-58 Chryslers and optional on the 57-58 Dodges. I did find out that while the 57-58 Chryslers and Desotos shared the RD21 buttons,
the 57-58 Neutral button was different between the Chryslers and Desotos, indicating again that Desotos did not get the N/Start feature. (see below). The Dodge Torqueflite buttons were different
again but there in only one 57-58 Dodge Neutral button PN showing so now I am confused. I looked for a photo of a 57-58 Dodge N/Start button but have not found one (yet).

The neural start feature was standard on the Chryslers & Dodges with automatic transmissions. I am not certain of Powerflites, but I believe they had it as well. The Dodge buttons didn't indicate the start feature on them, but the Chrysler buttons did. DeSoto & Plymouth didn't get this feature.

Suddenly I realized that I had a 57 Dodge FSM (hardcopy and pdf) so I checked that out.

Powerflite = neutral starting switch on transmission but still a key turn start. No push button start

Torqueflite = neutral starting switch on transmission but also a switch on the back of the shifter box. No "N/Start" button just "N". I guess Dodge people were smarter than Chrysler people (back then).

I’m really curious as to why only Dodge and Chrysler experimented with this feature. Why not apply this to all cars across the board? If it were an experiment to see how response was,why not put it on Plymouth since that was the largest seller in the Chrysler family? I realize nobody likely has answers to these questions. I’m just wondering aloud.

Yeah, there a lots of those questions that can only be answered by folks worked at Chrysler back in 1957-58, who, if still alive, are in their 80's or 90's and might not remember anyway.

While I am here, I thought that I would drop these 57 and 58 Chrysler torqueflite push button pad photos that show the N/Start button that the Dodges did not get (even though they had the feature):

57 and 58:
