Subject: 1956 Dodge V8 Powerflite

My1956 Dodge has a (I think) 354 rear end---did any Mopars of that era offer a rear end (322?) that was easier for highway driving? Most of our trips involve open highways and expressways 70+/- mph.

George: Sorry to disappoint but your 3.54:1 rear diff is as good as it got for cruising in 1956 (when the roads were slower and 70 mph was insane).

Unfortunately, the best option to get a higher gear ratio is to replace the rear axle. A B-body rear is a good replacement, but will require moving the spring pads and replacing the driveshaft.

The 8 1/4" gear set in most '56's dates back to at least 1937. The lowest numeric ratio offered in these gears was 3.31.

The 8 1/4 " rear was used up to at least 61 in the 6 cylinder dodges and plymouths. I have not tried but the newer ones may interchange with the 55-56 ones and more ratios may be available.

The '62-'65 6-cylinder 8 1/4" had 3.31 and 2.93 ratios but the interchange book doesn't show them fitting '61 and earlier. Don't know why.
