Purchased from a member here without knowing its application, seems like I can never have enough starters. There is no identification tag. Can anyone identify by its "snout"? There is no starter mounted solenoid, it uses the "bendix" drive to engage the pinion gear.

After digging out some of my other old Hemi starters, I'm guessing this is an early big block starter of some sort. The pinion gear matches that of my 392 Hemi starter and meshes the ring gear on my 172 tooth flywheel. So 1957 to 1961 big block, perhaps a dodge or plymouth since it isn't the "fancy" starter with solenoid mounted on it. I'd still like to know specific application if possible.

It is not a 57-61 big block starter, they did not have the odd bolt pattern. It appears to me to be a slant 6 starter that was used only in 60-61.

I think you're right. The 392 hemi starter is actually interchangeable with the big block starter. This one looks like the one in my '61 Lancer.

Thank you guys for helping me out. I only have 1 slant six (in my '61 Plymouth), but it is actually a much newer engine using the newer style starter. Have any need for this starter, I just cleaned it all up and it works fine on the bench.

Jon,

That starter could be from a slant 6 as I had parts from several 1960 slant 6 engines but thought that the starter went with the block when it sold.
When going through the pile of extra starters, w/o any tag on the that one there was no way to identify / confirm. Thus the reason that the starters were listed for cheap !

Has the second starter delivered ?

Chas
