I am ready to install new door weatherstrip but have a couple of questions. (1) Which is better to attach the weatherstrip to the door? Adhesive or Double face molding/weatherstrip Tape? (2) I have weatherstrip (I purchased some time ago) which is made for this car. However when I looked closer it appears there is a molded end on the weatherstrip on the upper end, (near the latch). I called a couple of people and find this is true but unsure if there is also a molded end on the hinge side. Any ideas/comments?

I have now ordered the molded end for the Latch side from Quirey part # 312 R/L and am still in doubt if there is a molded end on the hinge side??????

What are you working on? A '56 Chrysler/DeSoto? I have basically the same question. I know from the factory the strip was was held to the bottom of the door by a strip of wire with "barbs" bent into it in even spaces. What kind of weather strip tape are you considering?

I'm working on a 56 Dodge Custom Royal. Ya. you are correct about the wire. I can take a pic of the remains of the wire I have for you. I have not concluded yet if I am going to try to recreate the wire or just rely on the adhesive/tape??? I bought Pro Form Molding Tape 1/2" wide. Half the price of 3M and reviews are good.

Wire is 0.043 Piano wire. Should be easy enough to bend, carefully.

Just tried to bend a piece of 0.050". I will be too old to drive before I would get it correct! Does anyone have an idea what the reason for the wire was? Other than the adhesive in 1956 was not very good.

My guess is that it held the lower weatherstrip if the adhesive failed. I'm not going to replace the wire in my '56 Plymouth as the 3M adhesive seems to be holding very well.

Del S, yes, there is a molded end that fits at the top of the A-pillar where it meets the front of the "flipper".

Have you tried the tape out yet Del? How did it work?

I made a mess! I should have stuck with the tape but I changed my mind and decided to use 3M black weatherstrip adhesive. WRONG! I watched a couple of Utube videos and it look easy. Problem was they were demonstrating with 1 foot long piece. So I proceeded to spread the adhesive on the 7’ 9” long weatherstrip. Then on to the door, naturally the same distance. 7’ 9”. By the time I was done with the door the adhesive on the weatherstrip was dry. Video suggested two coats on one of the surfaces. So I did that. But you can’t work fast enough to go the distance before the start end is dry. Well! Too dry dry to stick to anything. That wrecked the weatherstrip for one door. Now I have to try and to get that @#$@# adhesive off the door.

I then tried a short strip of the tape on a piece of metal. Sticks not bad but then I read someplace that the adhesive on the tape is heat activated. Took my heat gun and warmed the weatherstrip a bit. Now it tears the rubber before coming off.

No more experiments. I have an experienced auto body fellow coming tomorrow to do it right. I’ll let you know what kind of job he does. If that doesn’t work, like my wife says, give me a tree and a rope.

Interesting, what was the specific tape you used? Pro Form Molding Tape 1/2" wide? Can you apply the tape to the body, then stick on the weatherstrip and then go over it with the heat gun afterwards to activate it? That seems like it would be the easiest way to me. By the way, I had the same experience with my cowl vent gasket on my Imperial even with the small area that it is so I plan to use the tape.

Yes. Pro Form moulding tape 1/2”. Putting the tape on the door and then the weatherstrip. And warm up the weatherstrip.

Couldn't find any "Pro Form" tape, but found these two options from 3M. Are either of these what you are using?

Pro Form is less money than 3M. The super strong is a good choice a bit thinner than the acrylic. Once you warm (not too hot) it up don’t try to pull it apart.

Del, can you provide a link or product number for the tape you're using? I cannot find any heat activated weatherstrip tape by 3M or Pro Form...

Del,

It's still not clear to me what you're using. I've checked Pro Forms website, none of their double-sided tapes mention heat activation in their application instructions. Website linked below:

http://www.proformproducts.com/en/products/repair-products/double-s...

I've also dug into 3M's automotive weather strip attaching tapes, which are heat activated, but I can't find where I can purchase a roll. See a link to their website below:

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/All-3M-Prod...

I don't want to use a tube of adhesive, I want to have time to carefully lay down the tape and then apply the weather strip. I've tried adhesive and made a mess, it's not for me. If can provide a link of the exact product you're using, you're happy with, and where/how I can buy it I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks again.
Jon
