Sportsman was just DeSoto's word for Hardtop. Dodge used Lancer, Plymouth used Sport (but didn't create any badges for it), and Chrysler used Newport up until 1956.

Nathan, you forgot the Nassau for ’56 Windsor Hardtop and St.Regis for ’56 New Yorker Hardtop also…
The Southampton nameplate for the Imperials since 1956 as well…

The guy in the first artists rendition sure looks happy driving that DeSoto,he’s literally beaming with pride.all the passengers are well dressed and seem to be having a wonderful time en route to their destination too. Even the advertising back then was an art. Rather than simply photograph the car with people in it,they hired talented commercial artists to create idealized versions of the cars for the brochures to further sweep prospective buyers into dream of ownership.

Sportsman was the name applied to all hardtops, 2 and 4 door, like my <---- '58 Firesweep Sportsman Sedan in the same way Holiday served to designate all hardtops at Olds, in Olds' case 4 dr hardtops were called a Holiday Sedan. I've had several Desoto and Olds 4 door hardtops and love all of them!

Some folks around here would go nuts when I mentioned a Lancer sedan like it was an oxymoron, but it made sense to me - four door hardtop.  This particular Sportsman sedan has an interesting exterior paint scheme.  Interior looks to be a little closer to stock.  Town and country radio and power windows = some pretty rare options!  Strange that it has the rear bumper guards, but not the front.  The paint looks like it is a mile deep.

This is true of '57-'58 DeSotos, but it's not applicable to all years of FL DeSotos. In '56 and '59, DeSoto had the Seville badge for hardtops as well as the Sportsman badge and '55 had a Firedome Special in addition to the Firedome Sportsman and Fireflite Sportsman.

Fireflite56 is correct, I tend to focus only on '57/8 so neglected the fact that the other years didn't follow that pattern.
