I had nothing else to do today HA! so I took my fender mirrors off to find out why they flopped loosey Goosey. And then this evening I re-read 56D500boy's thread from July
It appears, like lots of little cheap fixes previously, someone with no smarts attempted to fix these mirrors. They need re-chroming and glass. (Maybe less to buy new ones????)
The nylon washer between the mirror head and base was missing, the tension spring was replaces with a bunch of, I don't know what as it had disintegrated.

Scratched my head and found a nylon washer the exact fit. An oil pan drain plug gasket I purchased for Hot Heads when I bought the spin on oil filter adapter.
What stores energy similar to a coil spring? Rubber! So I cut a piece of 1/4" ID air hose with an OD of 7/16" x .800 long. The hose slips over the mirror head stud and holds in place nicely while you put the washers and nut on and snug up until the mirror head hold still. I did put a tiny bit of silicone grease inside the rubber spring, just because.

What about a base gasket? I dug out a chunk of EPDM sheet that I had and punched a 1/4" hole in the sheet for the forward stud on the base. Then I took a piece of plywood and drilled a 9/32" hole at the appropriate angle and then stuck the stud through the hole in the almost a gasket, pressed down hard and gingerly traced the outline of the base. It took a couple of tries before getting the cut just right. Then using a bigger hole punch cut out the center area of the gasket for the mounting block (1646.049)

By the way, my molding on the the fender is drilled and tapped 8/32 ad does not have a through bolt.

Del: Good job finding out that the oil pan drain plug gasket will work in the mirror. I know of at least one 56 Dodge owner with missing nylon washer(s) in his mirror(s) (Not me). Good to know.

The thread that you mention is this one:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=74062&...

The tubing spring is another good McGyver. Certainly never going to find a new metal spring if yours (or mine) was broken.

Not sure about the gasket. There was no gasket from the factory.

I've got a NOS left side mirror base that I need to drill and tap so it is good to confirm that it is 8-32.

I will link your thread in my thread to close the loop for future searchers.

Since my post, a slight problem arose. The right side mirror mount thread that I mentioned as 8/32 was loose, I guess from over tightening at some time. It is now 10/32. I did not remove the moulding to tap it out. The hole was as I said loose so I did not drill it out for the 10/32 tap.I used a taper tap to start and then a bottoming tap to complete the thread. Pretty soft metal. Also easy to open the hole in the mounting block to accommodate the 10/32. As for the gasket. The old Gary Goers catalog shows gaskets for every other year so I figured it wouldn’t Hurt to have a gasket under. Sound and sturdy. I will get the mirrors re-chromed at some point.

Del: I just got my right mirror base fender moulding back from the plater (yesterday). The mirror attachment lug is held to the moulding with an oval head 8-32 Phillips machine screw. My moulding is tapped through (8-32) and while the machine screw does poke through the moulding (a bit), it does not contact the fender. So all is well.

Ya. I measured the distance between fender and bottom side of moulding and knew I could get a good thread in the moulding.
