Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | I wanted to start a thread dedicated to the options & unique features of the '56 Fury. There are more things unique to them than I first realized so I would like to list and discuss them here. I am just getting involved with these cars so any input would be appreciated. To begin, all '56 Furys have a unique body number plate that is located at the center of the firewall, just above the heater box in the engine compartment. The first Fury rolled off the line with number 404-E1001 and ended with 404-E5485. I presume that the E represents the Evansville plant, where they were all built, and the 404 is some code for the new Fury model, but it would be good to get verification in the factory documentation if it exists. Unlike other models, I have not seen any other body data tags used on my 3 Fury's, but I'm not sure if they weren't used on any others or not. I remember reading a note from the old Plymouth Ranch owner, that data tags were "rarely used" on the '56 Fury. In the three-digit body codes the first digit means: 1 = Plaza 2 = Savoy 3 = Belvedere 4 = Fury The second digit – always zero (no idea what is it); And the third is a body code: 1 = 2 Door Business Sedan (guessing) 2 = 2 Door Sedan 3 = 4 Door Sedan (guessing) 4 = 2 Door Hardtop 5 = 2 Door Convertible (guessing) No idea about 4 Door Hardtops and Station Wagons body codes… | ||

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | Thanks for clearing up the body codes Igor. That now makes sense why they would put 404 at the beginning of the body number on these cars. The '56 Fury didn't receive some of the standard bright trim that was included or at least available on a Belvedere sport coupe. For instance: 1. The stainless trim under the trunk lip, between the reverse lights wasn't included on the Fury. 2. Neither was the aluminum trim on the sides of the glove box & ashtray. 3. I had previously thought that the wide "visor" windshield trim, option 424, would have been available on a Fury, but I have never seen one of them with it included. However, the wide drip rail trim, option 425 is standard on them. I see plenty of Belvedere coupes with the extra wide visor trim so it leads me to believe that it wasn't available for the Fury. | ||

Cal | Pictures of the above items: The stainless below the trunk was probably not included on the Fury because it's purpose seems to be to provide a seam for the 2-tone paint option on the Belvedere & Savoy. It seems that the trim on the sides of the glove box & ash tray are for 1955 only. I have a seen a couple of '56 dashes with the trim on it, but not enough to be convinced that it came with it from the factory. The wide visor trim above the windshield is pretty noticeable from afar as it is much wider and covers the drip rail. I have yet to find a Fury with this installed on it. Expert Posts: 1207 Location: Ponder, TX | Interesting topic! One thing I found different between my Belvedere and Fury are the grille crossbars. They are two haves to each side on the Fury bars while the Belvedere parts are one formed piece. I was told that all Furys had the split parts, but have not looked it up in the parts manual. FWIW, my Belvedere had the wide windshield trim and the Fury the narrower. Since the wide trim would appear to offer more wind resistance, I wonder if they actually tried to streamline the Fury since it was destined for top speed testing at Daytona? | ||

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | I wasn't sure what you were referring to, so I went out and took a look at my parts & cars. There it was, a grill bar with 2 separate parts to it. That one came from a Detroit built Savoy parts car. But all of my Los Angeles built cars also have single piece grille bars as well, just like the Fury. So it looks like it's more of a plant difference than something specific to the Fury, but since all the Furys were made in Evansville, it's definitely true that they would all have the same style. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | Thanks, I'm going to try to make 2 good ones. The third is already parted out. I noticed another plant specific difference on the Furys. The Evansville plant seems to follow the Los Angeles plant to a large degree. The Evansville & Los Angeles hood latch has the spring & pin attached to the hood with a catch & handle on the bottom (left in this picture), whereas, the Detroit cars have the spring & pin on the bottom with a catch attached to the hood (right version in this picture), more similar to the '57-up cars. It makes finding replacement parts for them a little more difficult. Edit: The Los Angeles cars definitely had the spring & pin on the hood, and the Detroit cars definitely had them on the base, but I am uncertain what the Furys came with. My early-build, yellow Fury has the Los Angeles style latch, my mid-build rusty Fury had the Detroit latch, and my white Fury was missing all of it. So I am not sure which one they originally came with, or if it was completely random at the Evansville plant. A "1" is used for a 4dr sedan. Here is a picture of a body code from a 4dr Belvedere sedan on Facebook. Also, just a note that Los Angeles built cars don't have this body tag on them. They have the 2 small holes in the firewall to position & screw the tag into it, but no tag attached. Neither my Savoy or Belvedere (both built in LA) have a tag like this on them. And whatever originally connected to it is long gone. Anyone know what that wire was used for? Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | I figured out the hood latch changes. It was an early vs. late design. The '55 Plymouth used the version with the spring on the hood like my Savoy, but late in '56 they changed to the other style with the spring down below. Here is a picture of the upper hood latch from my rusty, later build Fury without the spring and with the part number still stamped onto it. It is 1696775, which is listed as the late version in the parts book. So the fact that my Savoy, Belvedere and yellow Fury have the other style just suggests that they were built earlier in the year, which is true. The yellow Fury is the 111th one built.
