I am trying to bring a 59 Imperial back to life; has been sitting inside for 40 years. Trying to remove intermediate shaft to gain access to oil pump for priming. Shaft comes up about 2 inches and is free of the cam gear but will go no further. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank You.

I know that, there is residue on the shaft. Pull the shaft up as much as possible and try to spray penetrating oil on the shaft, then work up and down and repeat but it is probably better to remove the oil pump (very easy) and spray the shaft from below. Eventually you will get it out but do not force, as this can work the bushing loose.

If you don't get the shaft out, pull all the spark plugs so there is no load on the bearings which should be done anyway and add some light oil into each cylinder. as Sid said it is pretty easy to get to the oil pump from outside the engine.

Very good advice also heat the oil (pan).

BTW, I like your precautions starting the engine. This is how it must be done. I've seen it countless times, people pouring gas into an engine that hasn't been started for ages even with the old oil still in the pan. This has destroyed many good engines or put the equivalent of wear of 100+K miles on the engine in just a few seconds. You can watch the "Will it start?" vids on YT. Very depressing.
