Good Evening,

I am installing an A903 transmission into my 1960 Dart. It originally came out of a 1960 Plymouth. I have never done this before, I am confused on how the clutch fork is installed. There is a ball stud on the inside of the bellhousing and a flat spring clip on the back of the clutch fork...the Service Manual is not very descriptive on how these parts engage each other...does anyone have any further guidance or photos? I also cannot confirm nor deny I am missing some parts or I may have incorrect or incompatible parts... the parts catalog does not show the breakdown very well either. The bellhousing is for a V8 and the clutch fork is from a /6 Setup, I don't know if that matters. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

All good info but I need to see what is inside the bellhousing where the red arrow is pointing. How does the clutch fork attach/engage the ball stud on the inside of the bellhousing.

It is very simple, the fork has a recess that fits over the ball stud and the flat spring holds it in place. Once the transmission is installed it can't come off. Don't forget to install the throwout bearing on the fork and it also has springs to hold it to the fork. Sorry I don't have a picture handy.

Thank you for the information but it does not really help. I do not see anywhere on the stud for the spring clip to engage. I understand completely how the fork is pinned to the throwout bearing...my question is just about the pivot ball and the spring clip. It just does not make sense to me how this flat piece of spring metal clips onto a ball stud. Also, my clutch fork does not have a ball shaped recess in it. the only recess it has is a vertical recess approximately 1/4" wide and 1 1/2" long. I don't mean to be dumb - it just does not make sense. A photo or drawing would help. I attached photos of what my clutch fork looks similar to. It does not look exactly like this but like I said the recess is shaped the same and the clip is the same...how does the clip attached the clutch fork to the ball stud?

Now that you showed us a picture it is very clear, you have the wrong clutch fork. The one you have is a newer style that fits a bell with a flat bar, it clips over and pivots on. The one you need has a spring that is forked to fit around the ball. What year is the bell you are using? You need to find a fork to fit that year bell. The older 57 and up fork is for the ball stud and I am not sure when Mopar went to the flat bar style, sometime in the 60s.

Now that is helpful... that is sort of what I was thinking but I just wanted to verify I wasn’t completely crazy. So I need to find a clutch fork with a ball shaped recess and a forked spring? Is that correct?

I don’t know the year of my bellhousing, I just know it’s for a 318 poly and has a ball stud for the clutch to pivot on and no provisions to install the knife edge pivot.

Does anybody be have a clutch fork for sale that will work for my application?
