I am replacing the L6 in my 57 Plaza with a 301 I rebuilt, and I'd like to keep the manual trans (3-on-the-tree). Any idea if the trans behind the L6 will mate to the 301, or is there another option beside the aged torque flight (I have one that needs rebuilt) if I decide to go automatic (maybe something like a 727 or 901)?

Thanks.
Patrick

Patrick: Based on what I see at your website,

https://www.scotlea.com/

I am surprised that you aren't jumping to a Tremec 5 speed.

I am only replying with some information that I have. I don't really have your answer. But I do know that you can go to a 727 but it would likely require an after-market adapter plate. And unless you get the right year 727, you will lose the parking brake on the transmission and have to swap in a different rear diff with cable operated eBrakes.

Going old school, it might be possible that you can reuse your six cylinder's bell housing with a V8 adapter plate, if you want to stay 3 spd or cast iron Torqueflite. I went cast iron Torqueflite to replace my 56 Dodge's Powerflite and there was no change to the adapter plate or bell housing, but I got lucky with that.

There are a couple of old school OE adapter plates currently on eBay:

I believe the transmission itself will interchange, but you will need a new bell housing. Keep in mind that the old 3 speed trans couldn't take much abuse from a V8 motor.

The 301 will bolt up to any SB tranny up to '61. In '62 there was a bell pattern change. Your 301 would bolt up to a '62 & newer 727, and a number of other trannys using a 392 to (whatever) adaptor. The 904 won't fit the early hemi blocks due to starter location, don't know about the A Polys (assuming you have the 301 Pym Poly).

As mentioned, you would need a v-8 bell housing of similar vintage to keep the 3-spd trans. Your flywheel and clutch remain the same.
If you want/need an auto trans then your options would include a similar vintage PowerFlite or a similar vintage TorqueFlite. If you want/need to use a later style 904/727 then you will also need to buy a trans adapter. You would use the EarlyHemi adapter for a late TF. Pre-62 A series engines use the same block bolt pattern as the EarlyHemi engines.

Your original transmission has a non-synchronized 1st gear, which means that if you're coming up to a stop-sign or a light and downshift into first too early, the torque from the V8 could like cause severe damage to the transmission. Those transmissions were medieval in their timeperiod, and are only further outdated today. If you're convinced to stay manual, I'd follow the recommendations mentioned here and go with a T-5 out of a GM or Ford late model. Yes, it will be floorshift, but that's better overall. Column shift is clunky and makes little sense from a performance standpoint.
