56D500boy asked me to snap a photo of the cowl tag on my 1955 Coronet for their data base. As an armchair historian of all kinds of things, I gladly agreed to do so.

Curiously, the car does not seem to have one. I see no evidence of rivet holes or other mounting locations anywhere on the cowl.

Is this a normal occurrence? From my limited reading on the subject here, it seems to be the case.

Would there be another location?

I believe my car was a Hamtramck/Detroit-built car, but I'm not sure. The VIN (which, if I understand correctly, is the plan identifier), seems to indicate it was.

Ideas?

It's possible that the whole cowl data tag thing didn't start until half way through (or later ??) of the model run.

The Detroit 55 Dodge VINs ran from 34,740,001 to 34,970,679. Is your's closer to the beginning or the end of the run?

The LA cars had them on the right upper firewall, and Detroit put them on the radiator support on '57-up. I believe that Detroit may not have put a tag on '55-56 except a body tag just above the heater box in the center of the firewall. Does your car have one of those?

Dave,

My VIN is 34747829, placing it about 3/4 of the way through production.

The plot may have just thickened....

I seem to remember that Chrysler used to stick the paint/trim codes in the glove compartment on what amounted to a cardstock. Is that a possibility with mine?

Based on the VINs that I posted above (taken from the pages of the 55-58 Mopar Parts Catalogue), there were 230,678 1955 Dodges made. Assuming that the build year was 11 months, and 6 days per week, that works out to about 874 cars per day (on average).

Based on the VIN of your car as 34,747,829, it is only the 7,828th 55 Dodge made or only about 3.4% into the run, maybe about 9 days into the run, i.e. very early.

So it is very possible that early run cars did not get cowl data tags.

As for other information, there were paper broadcast sheets that stayed with the car so it got built according to plan. These were sometimes taped to the top of the cardboard of the glove box (or thrown on the floor before the carpet was added, covering the sheet.) You might find it. BUT I am not going to hold my breath.

Too bad. Always looking for new data points for these 55 and 56 Dodges.

Oh well.

There were a couple of numbers that looked like they were stamped into the cowl present. I don't know what those could be, but I'll be glad to take a photo and see if they tell us anything. If nothing else, I'm curious about that.

Wow. the early production is kinda cool in a way. I have also learned something else: I need to learn how to read my VIN better.

In the last few days, I've learned a lot, and I have all of you to thank.

Charlie, my 55 dodge custom royal is an early production car, built on nov. 20 1954, serial number 34761198. which is after your car was built. it does not have a data tag. it was the 21197 dodge down the line. would be interesting to know what day you car was built on.

I'm still figuring out how to get the car in my name (Massachusetts is being an absolute PITA about everything, I may have to do it through Vermont, which will accept a bill of sale), and once that's done, I can get the IBM card copy. I fully intend to do so.

I knew that I had read this in Mike Petersen's 1955 Dodge "book" but I couldn't find it until this AM:

"From my observations not all (1955 Dodge) cars were equipped with a paint/trim plate. Observations indicate that paint/trim plates were first used (on Detroit built-55 Dodges) between: 05/26/55 - 06/22/55 and on to the end of production for Detroit".

*IF* I am really bored, I will slam Mike's listing of weekly production numbers in a spreadsheet and try to estimate the VIN range when the trim plates first occurred.

The numbers are from Mike Petersen's book "1955 Dodge - by the numbers" and they were NOT arranged for easy scanning and entry into an Excel spreadsheet. So I typed them in my hand.

And thanks for flagging the date problem. (D'oh!!)

Just checked my spreadsheet. I had previously corrected the dates in the title but apparently I had NOT produced a new graph, etc. There are some issues with Detroit vs LA and 6s vs 8s but what I've done is probably as good as it gets.

My '56 Imperial Southampton Crown Royal doesn't have the cowl, rad support or firewall tag. But it's vin #'s all over the place on it. If you really and I mean really want answers contact Gaylen Govia (?) not sure of the spelling. But he is the chrysler god and he charges for his service. Other than that Chrysler historical society but some they can't because of a fire. I never found the build sheet or data card for my '56 either. The crown royals were hand built so I ain't too sure how they went about stuff. My '56 is a late year because it got the 3 speed torqueflite, first ones to my reckoning.
