Extreme Veteran Posts: 443 Location: Beaumont TX | I have an oil leak coming from the front of my 3 speed manual transmission. I'm wondering if there is a pinion shaft seal that could be leaking but I have studied my service manual and also the parts manual that Dave F. sent all of us. I can't see that there is a seal in the front pilot shaft (this is the shaft that the clutch plate rides on and also the shaft that sticks into the back of the engine crank shaft). If there is not a seal here, what keeps the oil from leaking out of the front? Anyway, does anyone have any ideas on where a leak from the front of the transmission might be coming from? Expert Posts: 1739 Location: Alaska | There is no seal as such on the front input shaft but it is designed so the oil does not travel forward on the shaft but drains back into the case. The bearing retainer that the throw out bearing rides on has a gasket under it but not likely to start leaking unless disturbed. If the trans. is overfilled, that may cause it to leak, also are you sure it is coming from the trans? A leak from the engine rear main seal can appear to be from the trans. | ||

Expert Posts: 3768 Location: NorCal | Be sure the trans isn't overfull and that the oil isn't from the rear of the engine i.e. crankshaft seal, valley, oil pressure hose, etc. | ||

Extreme Veteran Posts: 443 Location: Beaumont TX | Thanks, I'll check the level today. I just changed the rear main seal and everything in the back of the engine is very clean. I don't see how it could be engine oil but I've smelled the oil that is leaking and it does not quite smell like the gear oil usually does; but it is pretty thick. Also, if oil was leaking out of the transmission front shaft, seems like that oil would get all over the clutch and make it stick or slip. I'll get under there today and see what I can find out again. Something is just not right. I did have a bad rear main seal leak and thought the oil might be left over blow back from when the seal was leaking but I cleaned that off (I think I got it all) and now I have a new drop. I do some better looking today. Thanks.... | ||

Extreme Veteran Posts: 443 Location: Beaumont TX | I got under my car today and checked out the transmission oil leak again. It looked like there was some oil running down from the fill plug. I pulled it and put teflon tape on it and screwed it back in. I hope I am this lucky that this is the real problem. There was almost no oil at all coming from the front of the transmission this time so I'm hoping the oil I found there was just from the rear main seal leak I had. I could just feel a little oil with my finger but couldn't see any. This could still be coming from the rear main leak. I added 8 ML of AT 205 to condition the rear seal. It is not leaking yet but it is the original seal and I'm sure it is getting hard. I added 28 ML of AT 205 to my differential and it stopped my pinion seal leak. I was really impressed. Scotty Kilmer recommends this stuff and says he has been using it for 20 years with great success. I have used TransX in a couple of automatic transmissions and it stopped all the leaks and all of the rough shifting. I was amazed at that too because I usually don't have much confidence in this kind of stuff. But the AT 205 has worked for sure. Edited by samstrader 2020-12-08 10:45 PM | ||
