I would like to remove my Vickers PS pump from the back of the generator on my 56 Dodge and bring it into the house to clean, rebuild and paint. However, I have never (in 4 years) been able to remove the high pressure discharge hose because the fitting seems to be stuck in the pump housing. I haven't tried for maybe 2 years but I just tried again with a 5/8" Flare Nut wrench ("Jet" brand). All it did was slip over the nut, no movement of the nut.

I presume that one issue is the "Jet" brand is too weak (it shouldn't open enough to slip over the points of the nut like that). Or is there another issue that I am not seeing?

What brand flare wrench would work better?

The problem:

Sid: I am using a properly sized (5/8") chrome vanadium flare wrench already. Is the trick "heat" (i.e. after running the engine for say 30 minutes)?

Ignore the metric wrench in the photo.

Ok, I never had one of these solid things opening up. If its shot anyway and you have a welder, you could reinforce it with a couple of welds, as there is enough room around the fitting. Driving, not just running the engine. Off course you could heat the area around the fitting manually carefully, but I wouldn't use oxygen, just gas.

Maybe tapping the pump, close to the fitting, carefully with a little hammer while you put pressure on the wrench helps (never did that, but it might work).

use a little heat down @ 1/4 or so from the fitting with the fitting covered . not hot enough to start a fire but very warm to the touch -------------------------------------later

If someone mounted the fitting with Lock Tite, then You must heat it up for to loosen it. Should work with an Electric heat Gun.

A little heat is a good idea. You can do that with a propane torch. But I have never had one of my line wrenches open up like that. You need a better line wrench. I don't like paying a lot of money for stuff unnecessarily, but line wrenches are one case that I don't scrimp out on. I use Snap-on line wrenches and they always work.

My line wrenches are from China and really tough and not that slim where they are stressed most. I think they rather break than opening up, which is, when it comes to wrenches, a good thing.

When I have a worn fitting and the line wrench starts slipping I always have to go for my Irwin Wise-Grip with curved jaw. It has never let me down but some scars on the nut will be the result.
Usually some metal filing and some zink spray will fix that.
It is barbaric but works...

Wise-Grip? Oh, over here, we call them VICE-Grips.

I guess you mean this one? (Which I have never seen before - Thanks)

Sorry..vise-grip it is of course...I didn´t mean that special model on your picture but a regular one with slightly curved laws. Sometimes they are called idiot pliers in Finland...

I use Snap-On line wrenches. They bite and bust loose where others don't. But yep a tad of fire would help. I've ran into where even the O-rings are the things cause the tightness issue.

Yep but when the fittings are already a little worn when you start it doesn`t work with line wrenches ore any other not adjustable tool..

the tube nut is likely gaulded to the tube . take a vise-grip and clamp around each of the sides (not too tight) to see if you can break the seal , then apply more heat if
needed . a lot of times the tube will twist off before nut is free -----------------------------------later

Have you tried tapping the flare nut wrench with a hammer (not to hard) a lot of times to make the nut come lose. I've always had good luck using impact when just a straight pull wont work. A lot of not to hard licks loosens it up usually for me.

Tried that. The problem is the flare nut wrench is opening up and twisting over the points of the nut.

Has the fitting off rounded off from the slippage? I just had the same issue with the right front brake line fitting from the steel tube to the rubber flex line. It was like it welded together. Tried propane no dice. Tried map gas no dice. Got out my torch set, new rubber hose. Had to end using a small vice grip to pop it loose and to put it back together. If worst comes to worst. If you have enough line to pull it closer you might have to mean and hope the tube does twist. Or cut and re flare it with a new fitting. I did not have that option with my brake line. Just a luck of the draw it seems.
