Hello everyone, I came across this 1960 Belvedere for sale in British Columbia and I'm seriously considering buying it as my first car, I'm only 18 rn so you guys tell me whether or not I'm getting in to deep with this thing. If you need to call me an idiot I don't mind.
I'm in Ontario so this thing is pretty far and I cant look at it in person, I'll attach all the photos I have from the original ad and some the owner sent me. if you guys could help me out with what to look for when buying this kind of car (rust prone areas and common problems) id really appreciate it.

Thanks, Sean M

The guy who owns it sent me this:

Hi, it's a V8 in it but i can't find any information on the engine. As I bought the car 2016 the old owner told me the tank has a hole. We fixed it temporarily to see if it runs. We took it for a drive and I drove it home. I removed the tank to get it properly fixed. After this I never put the tank back in. Because the plan was to store the car until I retire to renovate it. I still have 10 more years to work. Now I need the space and the money. That's too bad because I bought it to keep it.

Problem with this is I planned to fly out to British Columbia to get the car, but it not having a gas tank is a problem. How hard do you think it would be to fit the gas tank and get it running?

The real challenge is the fact that I want to drive it over 4000 km home. I don’t know where I could get a trailer from.

You could run it off 3 or 4 five-gallon gas cans and a long rubber hose. I'd be much more worried through about what is going to break on that long trip without having thoroughly gone over the car. Consider having it shipped.

As far as rust goes, common areas are over the headlight on the tops of the fenders, floor pan, trunk pan, rockers, and bottoms of the quarter panels just for starters. Ask about the history of the car. It is constant high humidity and light rain in coastal BC. If cars are not kept under cover they don't fare well. A pretty red paint job can hide a lot from 4400 km away.

I made the mistake of buying a car sight unseen once. Once.

Either get a third party to inspect it for you or invest in a plane ticket. (my 2?)

Cheaper than what could be lurking beneath the exterior. ^^what Mike said^^
What was the sellers reasoning for the dash-ectomy?

I'm all for the fly and drive adventure but do a little more research on the road worthiness of the car and logistics/routes to take. Get yourself a CAA membership.
4000kms is a long drive in the middle of winter with an unknown sixty year old car. I highly recommend a copilot who can share in driving and turn wrenches.

A couple of things that I see in the picture... The heater has been disconnected. Why? Gonna get awfully chilly out on the road. Dual brake master cylinder is a good thing. Engine is most likely a 361. Ask the seller to inspect the block under the distributer.
Love that steering wheel!

You're a young guy Sean....if you're going to go ahead with this either find someone out here that can take a good look at for you or come out yourself ideally with someone who knows their way around these cars.......if it's good, then rent a U-Haul trailer and truck to take it home. It'll cost a few bucks but like I said, you're a young guy.....good luck!....

If you do it, be sure to have something else to drive in the winter and/or back-up car.

I also agree it would be wise to have it checked over by someone closer to you before buying.

With all that excess wiring hanging below the dash, I wouldn't be driving it anywhere like that....
