Looking for HP air cleaner used from 1959-1961 on big block 361 engines. Usually found on 1959 Plymouth Golden Commando 361 big block engines, but also used on Dodge, Desoto, and Chryslers.

There are a few different styles for those big block (B and RB) air cleaners. This is another one, not related to the "395" (torque, lb-ft, not HP) ones you are showing.

:)

Not when the big block was put into a Plymouth or Dart, which made it a Golden Commando or D500. They didn't have a snorkel. The "domestic" Plymouths and Dodge that is. My Canadian Golden Commando has a snorkel AC, not sure if that is OE though.

Those commando style air cleaners weren't used on the Chrysler or DeSoto. The '59-'61 300 and '59 Adventurer were dual quad motors. Single 4bbl motors used the large air cleaner with the snorkel that Dave posted.

I thought a '60-'61 D500 motor would have been a long ram motor as well. The '59 D500 didn't use this commando air cleaner either.

I wish that my D500 was a long ram set up. Alas, 361 4bbl dual exhaust.

Quite a bit of discussion and disagreement on what air cleaner was on what car from the factory. I have seen a 1960 Desoto with the small air cleaner with no snorkle that I am looking for, and I was told it was factory. There was a facebook discussion a few weeks ago about this air cleaner, and one of the posters said he had an original 1961 Chrysler 361 that came from the factory with this style. I believe that all the 383 and 413 engines had the big air cleaner with the snorkle, but for sure the police cars and the 1961 Dart D-500 with the 361 had the small air cleaner I am looking for.

From Nick's Garage website:

"1959-61 Golden Commando 395 (361 cubic inch 4-bbl.). Also used on police cars. It appears police units are black with no decal although I have a small picture of a 1961 Dodge with what appears to be the remains of a decal. If anyone has good photos of one, please contact me."

The only Chrysler in the forwardlook years that came with the 361 is the '61 Newport, and it used the snorkel air cleaner. If the Newport was a factory police car, that would make more sense.

On eBay he goes by r4daytona. On the FL face book contact Sean Machado. Pretty sure he has a few. Either him or J.C. Auto might as well.

Did those even exist in 1961?

There were at least two styles at some point (later?)

I think I have the air cleaner from a 61 Chrysler, Black there is also a tube connection on the underside if I remember correctly. I have had problems posting pictures.

APPLICATIONS

This assembly is correct for the following 1959-61 361/395 lb. ft torque models:

Plymouth

Sport Fury, Police Enforcer, Belvedere

Desoto

Adventurer, D300

Note: This assembly was specific to the high performance 361 B engines from 59-61. It will fit a variety of big block (361/383/413/426 wedge/440) single 4 barrel engines from 59-66, but is technically correct for the 59-61 models. It is different from the 413/426 max wedge air cleaners in design and fitment and will not fit properly.

FITMENT

The assembly will fit factory 4 barrel carburetors (Carter AFB) with a 4 1/8" diameter flange only. If you have modified your carburetor or intake manifold, please inquire first prior to bidding to ensure fitment is correct. Return requests for non-fitment will not be honored.

Do you have documentation that these came on DeSotos? The performance engine for 1960 is ram induction and in 1961, the only engine is the 361 2bbl.

You can just use an aftermarket 12" filter base if you don't mind using a later style carb.

I have always wondered what or if there was a
decal for 383 4v 61 Plymouths
A engine option on police package cars.
VERY rare in civilian production Furies.
Anybody here ever seen one?

OR Maybe.

According to the Sanow and Bellah Mopar Police Car book, in 1961 Plymouth listed an optional engine for the Pursuit Special.

This engine was a 383 with 10:1 compression and 4 bbl carb. It developed 325 old hp at 4600 RPM and 435 lb-ft of torque at
2800 RPM.

It was apparently called the "Maximum Performance Golden Commando 435". *IF* there was a decal, it would probably be modelled on the
Golden Commando 395, except 435 instead of 395.
