Has anyone every used one of the online vehicle check services that uses the VIN to capture the information? If so, what were your results?

Those only work for 17 character VINs, which started in 1980. Any vehicle before that, they typically cannot provide any information.

There are a number of states that offer some form of vehicle history/look-up service that you might try if you know what state(s) the vehicle of interest has been in. You will have to check online state by state though and there may be a small fee.

The VIN number on these 55-61 cars, at least the earlier ones, tells you almost nothing about the car. It will tell you whether the car was a Plymouth, Dodge, Desoto or Chrysler and *MAYBE* the plant that it was built at.

You will probably get more info from forum members here if you post a photo of the VIN and data tag (firewall or rad support or engine bay fender liner).
