So, the push button transmission has been working great this past year and a half but now after I've been in reverse and I push the neutral button it does not disengage. I have to put into drive then to neutral. I'm assuming there is an adjustment that needs to be made but is this a sign that things are starting to go badly? Is there any maintenance that I should be doing to extend the life of the transmission apart from replacing the fluid? the vehicle has 42k original miles on it.

thank you,

If it was originally and properly installed and adjusted......
Check the star wheel on the cable.
The bolt may have come loose or the threads stripped out.
Those star wheels are pretty thin and have very few threads.
Best to have a machinist make a new and thicker one IMHO

It sound very plausible that the cable is moving at the star wheel.....

being a DIYer where would I find this star wheel? Is it up by the gearshift control unit where the push buttons are or is this at the other end at the transmission itself?

Thank you,

At the transmission. You can answer many of your questions by going to Mymopar.com and downloading the closest service manual to your car (I used 60 Dodge for the info below):

.
I don't know if this translates or not but with my 56 Dodge 4 button PowerFlite 2 spd automatic the sequence was R, N, D, and L.

Where R pulled the cable back the most, away from the transmission and L pushed the cable the most towards the transmission.

makes me wonder if it's the neutral cable that needs adjusting. Reverse goes in properly but when I shift into neutral it stays engaged in reverse.

There is no "neutral cable". Just the one cable that does everything. I'm sure that it must need adjusting if it isn't going into neutral after reverse.

This would be a "hack" but if you go from Reverse to Drive does it go into Drive? If it is in Drive, will it go to Neutral? You must be able to get to Neutral somehow because unless somebody has jimmied the system, the neutral starting switch would prevent you from starting the car unless it was in neutral.

Maybe the short trim trick is to go from R to D to N?

The adjustment procedure was posted previously (I think).

yes, I can go from reverse to drive no problem and from drive to neutral no problem. Yes adjustment procedure was given.
