It's been so long since I've torn into a door handle that I'm not able to be of much help to a guy who needs it. He sent me these pictures, attached below. These are the correct handles, and came off the car about 3 years ago. However, he's having a "devil" of a time getting things to hook together well. To quote him, "The two flat 'bars' is what I am having trouble with. I can attach them with a bolt. They each have to bend severely in order for me to do that, making them bind when I try to use the handle to open the door. I feel like I am missing something, or possibly making some error."

He also told me "The issue being when I connect the two with a bolt the two bars are not perpendicular. They bend to connect."

Seems to me the two bars shouldn't be perpendicular at all, but straight (going from memory).

All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

They should be straight. If not they straighten when the handle is lifted and the travel might not be enough to free the star wheel.

Yes, they shouldn't be perpendicular, and the grooves on one should mate up to the matching grooves on the other. They line up straight with each other. Ask him to make sure he doesn't have the rear door latch installed into a front door or vice versa. Same with the handle. There are front and rear versions, though the fronts have a key in them so it's more obvious. As Ralf stated, a common problem is not having enough pull, and for that, you need to slot that plate further so you can get them closer together.

I agree with what you are both saying, from my experience. It's a 2-dr car, so no chance on mixing up the latches. He sent me 3 more pictures, the first showing how we think things SHOULD connect. What he says, though, is that pictures 2 and 3 show how things "hang" once installed in the door. If that's the case, you can see that the two connecting straps aren't close enough to each other to connect. Any more ideas? Thank you!

The serrated lifting plate on the handle on the car I'm working on is riveted on the rear side of the lever, closer to the lock cylinder. The one in your pictures appears to be on the front side. Is it possible that it has been removed and reinstalled on the wrong side? The difference from one side to the other is right at 5/16", it could be enough miss-alignment to cause binding.

The problem is that the door handle assembly is from a 4dr HT, which is unique and different, when he needs one from a 2dr HT or 4dr sedan.

Ron is right , but the potmetal part numbers on 2d ht and 4d ht are the same , 1707383. And from my picture you can see that the lever is riveted on different sides on the two handles.
Probably this will be ok if the lever is riveted on the other side.

That's not a part number. It's a casting number. The assembly, which includes the extended lever piece, is a unique part number. If you have a junk door handle for 2dr HT or 4dr sedan, you can grind off the rivet, swap the lever and have the two attached with a commercial-grade rivet.

1707383 is the casting number or as I called it pot metal parts number. I know that the assy number is different.
