I have my '59 DeSoto dash apart and it's a great time to lubricate the speedometer and cable. I had a speedometer whine when it was cold last year, so I added a few drops of sewing machine oil to the wick a couple times and that did help some, but so far it's not completely quiet. I'd like to make sure I lubricate everything with the proper lubricants so it's nice and quiet when it all goes back together. Based on a couple other threads, it appears I should do the following:

1. Wick lubricated with sewing machine or 3-in-1 oil. Is this correct?

2. Speedometer cable cleaned and lubricated with regular bearing grease. Is this correct?

3. Are there any specific points on the speedometer itself, aside from the wick, that can be lubricated? I have the whole thing apart right now.

Some sources recommend lithium grease for the cable but dedicated speedo cable lube contains graphite.

I tried grease alone and it gives to much friction when cold, so I mixed Teflon grease with synthetic oil to a honey-like viscosity. It work great and forever. Cleaned and replaced it once in 30 years but wasn't really required.

Thank you both for the suggestions on the cable lubrication.

I found an old can of "SPEEDOMETER CABLE" lube on a shelf and it appears to be graphite.
It worked well but how do you lube the speedometer gears themselves?

Take the speedometer completely apart is the best way. You'll see the gear assembly inside it. Remove the old hard grease and use new stuff. You can try just adding thin oil to the end of it, but that isn't usually the problem.
