Forward Lookers,
My 57 NYer power steering has leaked for some time now...I've been putting the Lucas fluid in it hoping it would stop leaking one day...it hasn't...how big a job is pulling one of these and replacing seals? If its not up my alley, who in the Northeast rebuilds them?
thanks,
billy

You can take it to any Napa store to have them send it out and get rebuilt. You need to remove the steering wheel & the clip at the top of the column, to get the column to shift upward, to get access to the pin that holds the column to the gear. It isn't fun, but it isn't terrible. Replace the rubber joint at the same time.

Napa here in upstate N.Y. wants no part of a constant control unit. Midwest Manufacturing, outside of Chicago is one, 800634 5829.

Are you referring to the pump, or the steering box ? If it's the steering box, send it to Lares and they will do a first class job on it. Not cheap, however.

BTW, they will also do the pump if you need that rebuilt.

Went to NAPA and asked for a Power steering pump rebuild kit, no luck....is there a generic seal/gasket available for the pump?

There are pitman shaft, sector shaft & worm shaft seals available on Rockauto. Hopefully the rest are just generic orings that you can get from mcmaster. But if you decide to rebuild it yourself, you will be left to try and find all the parts yourself. I tried to find a power steering pump kit to rebuild my pump, but couldn't find anything. I gave up and gave it to Napa to rebuild for me. Their rebuilder was able to do it, but I don't know where they got the parts from.
