I just received a rechromed bumper from a very reputable vendor for my 1956 Plymouth. Unfortunately the mounting holes are in different places on the new bumper compared to my old one. The bumpers look like the same shape but obviously use different mounting brackets. the new bumper has a square and a round hole close together as if the bumper guard would cover both holes. Any idea what I got? Unfortunately my parts book only has illustrations for the
57s and 58s.

A picture would help.

A photo would help us figure things out.

In the meantime, I had my rear bumper off my 56 Dodge yesterday to clean up the back side (to remove the surface rust) and then paint (Treclad rust paint). During this process I discovered that the part number (PN) of the bumper is stamped into the back. Mine was 1553 931. I checked the PN in the parts pdf that I use and found the PN to be correct for 1955 and 1956 American (120 in wheel base) Dodge rear bumper"face bars". The PN for a 1955-56 Plymouth (and Canadian Plodge) rear bumper is 1553 932.

The PN for a 1955-56 Dodge front bumper face bar is 1639 465. A 1955-56 Plymouth (and Canadian Plodge) would be 1634 054.

See what, if anything, you can see on the back of your bumper for a PN and report back.

Look for stamped part number on the back side.
May or may not be there. I have seen them on some MoPar bumpers.
Pictures will help a bunch.
Do the illustrations and part numbers in the book show more than one application??

Thank you to each of you who responded. There are several hard to read numbers scratched into the back of the bumper. The only clear and stamped number is
777. I'm embarrassed to say I have no idea how to upload a photo with my post.

777 is not a bumper bar related number (I checked). You either need to find a 7 digit number like 1512 345 or post a photo.

Hints on posting photos are found here:

Basic hint is NOT A JPEG FROM AN iPHONE. Must be a .jpg. Must be < 250 Kb (1024 x 768 works well). Other details are in the link.
