Hello I am trying to figure out what type of rear axle dodge used in 1956, for a 1956 dodge custom royal.
curious if the third member from a 1967 dodge 8 3/4 would fit into the 1956 or if the brake assembly could bolt on? Ultimatley trying to figure out how to have parking brakes once i swap a 318 with a 727 into my sons 56 dodge. But I cannot seem to find out what name/type/kind of rear axle was used in 56.
Thanks for any help.

In 56 Chrysler used their own differential and it was identified as an 8 1/4 "This was also used up to 61 in the 6 cylinder Dodges and Plymouths. It does not interchange with the more common 8 3/4' used from 57 into the 70s. Not sure what newer axle assy. is the easiest to use in the 56 and older cars but I am sure someone on this forum has the answer.

Welcome to the board royalduke.

There is no newer 8 3/4" rear end that will bolt into a '56. The closest fit is the '65-'67 B-body rear end but the spring pads are on 44" centers while the '56 is 41". After moving the spring pads inboard, the parking brake cables can be routed to the drivers side and attached to the hand brake cable.

Yep, like this photo, and you will need to replace or modify your driveshaft. Also, you will want to use your old spring pads because they are narrower than normal, which is required for the splayed leaf springs. They also have the lower shock mount on them so you can use your original U-bolt plates.
