While I was working at the front of the car, playing with my leaking/not leaking heater core (and changing the heater valve), I decided to take the opportunity to remove the rear bumper and make it better somehow. (I wasn't sure what I was in for). I had previously seen a eBay photo of the back of a rear bumper guard/bumperette and I wasn't happy with the idea of that much potential rust back there. So off the bumper came so I could de-rust it and protect it (and the guards) with an anti-rust paint (in my case, Tremclad Gloss Aluminum).

Four bolts (all with 3/4" nuts), one towards each of the ends and one each at the bumperettes/guards =4. To get the bumperette/guard off, you need to disconnect the license plate light cable from the connector under the bumper, at least on a 56 Dodge. I had to use needle nose pliers to grab the male flat connector and wiggle and pull until it came out.

With the bumperettes off, I was please to see that they weren't as bad as the one that I had seen on eBay. The back of the bumper had some surface rust. I used a portable drill and various wire wheels, cup brushes, etc to remove the rust. Same with the bumperettes, after removing the license plate lights (two 8 x 32 Phillips screws per light).

The license plate lights were a bit rusty on the outside, but again, not as bad as what I had seen on eBay. I used a fiberglass multi-strand wheel on those. The gaskets were crispy so I made new ones using a cereal box template and laminate flooring underlay foam and the original crusty foam gasket as a guide.

The bolts and washers all spent at least a day in a rust-removal bath and then were brass-wire brushed and dried before being painted.

The bumper, the bumperettes and the license plate light lamp holders all got a coat or two of the Tremclad Gloss Aluminum. The external electrical portion of the license plate light lamp holders got a coat of Tremclad Professional (fast drying) semi-gloss black. (I love that paint).

The electrical connections got cleaned with 400 grit W&D sandpaper and DeOxit (equivalent).

When I was putting things back together, I put the lamp holder labled "L" in the left bumperette and "R" in the right. Makes sense right? Well it would appear that somewhere in the past 65 years, somebody had swapped the lamp holders with "L" in the right and "R" in the left. The difference is the position of the bulb. Now the bulb is actually throwing light towards the license plate much more than it was before. Before, the bulb was pointing away from the rear of the car.

Some photos, beginning to end:

Nice work Dave!

Thanks Ralf. No where near the quality of your work but my objective is always to just make my car better (than when I found it).

I think that I did that so I am happy (enough )

I guess when I did that back in 2021, I forgot to show how the license plate wiring works, i.e. from the harness in the trunk, through a grommet to behind the bumper, to a 2 pin female spade connector and then out to the license plate lamps in the rear bumper guards.

These photos should remedy that (and also prompt me to do some clean up in my 56 Dodge trunk) (I just went back out the garage and put the wiring into that support clip (DUH))
